My new boss told me that! ;) Do you have any advice as to which is better, PEP or EP? I'm worried PEP might be a signal to my employer I don't tend to hang around too long, but I see with one PEP application I can sponsor my two sons straight away.

One is making you a subcontractor and relieving the employer of paying CPF for you. The other is a normal employment letter/contract. The Contract for Service is technically illegal if you are required to maintain the normal office hours required by the employer as well as other company SOP. MOM .....

I would think seriously about your marriage if one wants children and the other doesn't. Can seriously throw a spanner in the works later. Better sort that one out first. From one who has had several wives and several children.

Ideally, you shouldn't go for more than 30% of your income--and I think this is a global fudge factor people go by. I personally spend 23% and yet I share a flat with others. I have a friend who spent almost 50%!

You can get a service apartment for a lot less than that, but you'll be somewhere like Geylang. The cheapest I'm aware of that are decent (thinking ~3star hotel in US) is about S$4k+

You're going to find expats making anywhere from $3k-30k per month, and probably spending 10%-60% (or even more for the more Kiasu expats) per month. I personally think it's ridiculous how much rent is here and would rather throw my money away than give it to a local LL, so I stay at the low end .....

One little note you should be aware of. Just because you are qualified for a PEP, it is not a guarantee that you will receive on. The criteria is there just to qualify one to apply for, not necessarily to get, one. The income guidelines are only that, a guideline for who can make an application .....

This is common, but it still is hard. The PEP will help immensely, as will being here with a local address and phone #. Recruiters here are terrible. I would suggest targeting specific MNCs you know are here. (go to their whatever.com/careers or /jobs)

Most condos have underground parking lots and will have bike racks where you can leave your bike. Unless you use it often though, it might be stripped after a period of time. Otherwise, an noted, keep it in your house or on your balcony.

While searching for an apartment in Singapore I haven't seen a single condo with basement storage. Most of the storage rooms are inside the condo (eg. bombshelter) but usually not airconditioned. If you need an airconditioned storage room choose a condo with 1 more bedroom and use it as storage .....

Lots of the places I stayed in California did this. I actually did it (but with a debit card), because I hated writing checks and the places had a $24 fee to do electronic withdrawal. It all depends on whether your employer is covering the freight costs, both to Singapore and onwards from here when the time comes. Not sure I'd ship a lot of stuff if I had to pay for it out of my own pocket, but if it was part of my relocation package then that would be an entirely different .....

Also check out the New Mothers Support Group here in Singapore. They have a Facebook page, and the moms there are always posting good gently used baby items for sale. Don't think you find that in any condo/apt/hdb but for nominal sums you can rent "lock and store" units in various locations throughout Singapore from about 1.5 to 2 cu/m to garage sized units. Most of the storage facilities has either climate controlled or natural units.
