If you are PR, you are still giving away your NRIC number with the DL.

I don't even carry one with me. AM I meant to? should I be carrying my pass around?

Once before I had a job, I was stopped by a cop. Asked me for my IC. Mind you I was out and quite tipsy. I had no idea!! All I had was my Australian drivers licence from Queensland (any Qld'er would know, the old drivers licence was laminated). He looks at me and kept asking for my IC. Just because I am asian. Felt so bummed. Anyway, turns out.... he stopped me because I looked thai (which I am not) and there was a thai disco club nearby. GO ME!

anyway, I got away with it. I got a tad annoyed and kept asking him questions. And he just let it pass.

It is against the law to not carry your local identification (can be the NRIC or the Driver's License, or your EP/SP/WP.) In theory you should also carry your passport if you are a tourist. I'd recommend only carrying a photocopy of the front page or a photocopy of your NRIC if you tend to lose your wallet a lot.

You're lucky you didn't end up in the clink.

I used to carry a copy of my passport page, inside my wallet. Now I don't even carry a wallet, just a bill-clip with a few notes on it.

It doesn't concern me that carrying ID is required (a la WW2 emergency era/status in Europe). This is a nation at horizontal peace, and 'I am a man, I am not a number'.

If they want to lock me up, because my ID is in my bedroom 50 metres away, and not in my shorts, I'm not bothered... <just>

So everywhere accept a copy? If not then surely you need to review your statement.
