I love Taiwan. Enjoy. I worked on the Kaohshiung MRT project and got to like KS a lot.

So cool! I haven't been in years, really looking forward to it. Apparently there was an earthquake a couple days ago, but no real damage so I think it'll be fine.

You should check the Grand Hyatt in Taipei out. At least for a night.

I can’t recall the name of the hotel we stayed at in Taipei, but we got a deal on this one that had a car lift and a parking spot next to each room door that faced this giant hallway that can be driven down. The bathroom was bigger than the bed room and had steam shower and jacuzzi with a TV, etc.

Yes!! You're so right! Been eating so much street food every day, but not as full as you might think as you walk most of it off. Walked shifen old street yesterday. Took an hourlong bus ride from Muzha station (long ass ride with no seats as all were taken by older folks). Once there, had some excellent food - hand pulled dry noodles, braised tofu and meats, peanut ice cream rolls. Skipped the sky lanterns as it was very crowded. Then, took a 30 minute train ride to (some station, can't remember the name) where we changed to a train that took us straight to Taipei main station. Public transport here is so similar to SG, clean and packed. Road culture is vastly different though, drivers here are mad! Ended up taking taxis to and from each hotel - from airport to hotel in Jiantan the fare was $1270 ntwd ($56 SGD). Pretty pricey but we just had too much luggage to lug on the metro.therat wrote: ↑Wed, 30 Nov 2022 3:34 pmI didn't take any taxi in Taipei.

once I took metro , another time I took their bus.
It really depend where is your hotel.
I went to Taipei twice, I book my hotel near taipei station. I like this location. centre and it have train station, metro station and highway speed station. all in 1 place.
Please take note, in Taipei station there is only 1 lift at the centre. If you miss the lift, all are stair case. The one link to BIG hotel, I think have escalator

They had some interesting menu items like crab roe XLB and chocolate XLB which we tried. Chocolate XLB
was awesome! Really rich, bitter, high-quality chocolate that went surprisingly well with the thin dumpling skin. Reminded me of a cross between a mochi and a lava cake.

I have to disagree as far as the driving goes. Drivers here are intense... we took a cab from the night market to our hotel in Taichung, driver literally committed a hit and run. Honked repeatedly at another car which was forcing its way into our lane, but refused to give way when the other car didn't back off. Took the other car's side mirror right off, and didn't even stop. If you are exploring outside of Taipei, I recommend renting a car, it is one of the few places in Asia that is as easy or easier to drive than Singapore.
We spent most of our time in Taipei, and it’s still a bit like an overgrown Chinatown in many ways, but many parts have modernized and are more like Singapore.
I wasn’t that impressed with the night markets, maybe the popular ones are too touristy, or maybe I am spoiled on good food in Singapore.
The only memorable food was the little “hole in the wall” places that were nearly impossible to order from unless you are good in Chinese, but if you manage to get your order in, the noodles and dumplings you get are better than any you’ll get here.
