Finally they are going to search in the area previously identified by Inmarsat as the most probable location for wreckage:

Due to the (now believed to be false) pings that needed investigating further north, the searchers have not been able to get to the above highlighted area until now.

Those false pings were interesting. As a former ROV guy with some experience in acoustics I did the math and could not work out a reason for the error in the pulse rate and frequency change from the normally tight Drane transducer pings....
While doppler might have accounted for the frequency shift I found it hard to believe that a XTAL locked signal would have more than 10% error in the pulse rate.

Considering the S/N ratio they were pushing the receivers to (probably equiv to 1PPM or perhaps a fraction of a dB) - I think the 'pings' were an internal physical or electronic feedback loop from some extraneous circuity or ships machinery that showed up on their receiver circuit.

I mean I never figured out how they got so hyped up on a false ... Ping ...

I don't believe the ship borne false ping scenario... This would have been spotted at a very early stage as they were lowering the detector into the water....
Just dropped it in to the water, Pings strength 9++.
Lower the cable, Pings strength 5.
Even lower still, Pings strength 2.
Someone must have spotted

Legal speak, if they don't declare it as an accident, for the time being, the Insurance companies will not process the claims, pending a resolution, and culpability (I hope that is the word .. )
The investigation continues, and the search continues ..
AF447's black boxes were recovered after 2 years I believe .. and till then, the cause was a lot of speculation !

From what I've read, as squirrel said, it is just so they could process stuff. Let's face it; everyone and their grandma knows it is more than just a mere accident. I don't think Malaysia can afford another 'gaff.'
