Still waiting on the PR application results, so it will be a long time before I see an NS letter I'm sure. I'll be sure to update when I do get it though.

We filed ours at the end of last month. So, hopefully it won't be too much longer of a wait. Had trouble getting a job and I'm hoping the PR thing will make it easier. Having to leave SG so often to renew my passport stamp is getting costly. We found a good deal this time though. We're gonna go to Kuala Lumpur for a few days.

The low pay for NS is when you are drafted as a teen. I was told by locals that when you get called back the army has to pay your going rate of your current job, thus if you earn a high salary they are less likely to call you up for anything than the bare minimum as it costs them too much.

It is all heresay, but it may be that you can expect them to pay your market rate to do NS, or you might be exempted just because it will cost them too much.

For the record, Yes, your reservists duty is based on your civilian salary. However, this does not stop them from calling up the high earners either. If you but stop and think about it, those with high level civilian jobs may well have also been high ranking personnel in the military as well (stands to reason - barring certain mindsets) Therefore, doesn't do much good to only call up the indians (figure of speech) without any chiefs to lead them does it? Believe me, the only reason you don't always see the high ranking civilians reservists is because of the waiver letters that we (HR) have to write to get their lazy arses out of it!

Admirable in theory, but here's the reality: a very well paid IT consultant friend of mine is regularly called up for reservist duty, where he utilizes his specialist skills and lofty military rank of "Corporal" by sitting around in a warehouse handing out kit to other called-up reservists. Your tax money at work

JP, you might want to go back a read the thread. I was replying to the poster who said "high earners" don't get called up. I was actually disagreeing with him. So the reality is, you just backed up what I was saying. The fact that he was only a corporal was immaterial.

That would be me who was putting up a theory which local friends were quite convincing about. Obviously they have a half formed theory and I am duely chastened!

Hi Derek, I'm just successful apply for SPR under sponsorship of my wife, i notice that I will be the second generation and MAYBE liable for NS. after you completed your formalities for the PR, anything you need to do to find out you're liable for NS or not ? appreciate if u share ur experince

A Letter from CMPB will be send to your local address . If you do not receive after a wee while , call CMPB to confirm your status by providing your SPR Number. They will send an e-mail to that effect of your liabilities

If you are under 30 and got your PR using the family ties method and not the PTS scheme, then there is a good possibility of being called up. Over thirty....... probably waivered off.

On, by the way, you are not Second Gen PR. That is only applicable if you are granted PR under the PTS Scheme.
