Singapore Expats

Since I moved in to flat my I hear this incredibly annoying noise every 3-4 minutes, having spoken to the security guys I have found out that this noise is from a Koel bird; youtube samples confirm this.

Now this is silly bird whistles in consistent pattern and can be heard through the windows and even worse, through my noise cancelling earplugs!!!!

I hear this species is commonly found in singers, has anybody else experienced similar?

Geez mate. Pack up and move home if that's bothering you.

Maybe the birds are building/built a next near the aircon vent. When I first moved in to my current house, I could hear birds comings and hitting the aircon opening cardboard plank with their beak and upon further investigating I found lots of twigs etc. I threw away all the twigs and used a cloth to block the hole through which the bird was getting into the aircon opening.

It's part of the ambiance. I think they are cool.

They first arrived in Singapore in the 1980s and became very common birds

We have a number of them here. They start chatting about 5 in the morning. The guy in our tree chats to one about 3 trees down, so he has to be loud. This is replicated down the street. It's noisy but I don't mind. Having exposure to nature here is a good thing in my book.

I looked at the wiki that Wd40 showed. I couldn't recognise the bird but I definitely recognise that mating call!

There is this type of bird that has a (mating?) call that sounds like squeaky toddler shoes. When I first moved, every morning at 7am I would hear those squeaky sounds and told myself, "Boy, the grandparents do have consistent schedule to bring their little grandchild out for a morning stroll!". Anyway, here's how the bird sounds.

The Koel is the small black bird with the yellow beak. Its the most common bird in Singapore. You cant miss them.

They are very common near my blk as well. We dont mind them at all, we keep our windows open in the night and these birds are like natural alarm clock During the day time also they make a lot of noise and try to enter our kitchen from the window, looking for food.

That sounds like our favourite common myna birds! The call is different though but still commonly heard.

I think you've got both mixed up, no? Koel birds are worlds different.

Lynx, you are right, the birds near my block are indeed the javan myna. Sorry for the mix up
