But then, Singapore...

Singapore bans a childrens book featuring two gay penguins. No, really!

Once a Jolly Hangman - Alan Shadrake. He even spent time in Singapore for this. Exposes the brutality of the justice system.

And the other book about families because it had single mum and a lesbian couple as different types of 'family unit' apparently some religious group complained that this was exposing children to unnatural family situations. Well, speaking as someone to come from one of these unnatural families I reckon I've turned out pretty decent. Plus the penguin story is actually based on a true story from NY zoo!

so foreigners should be allowed to run local policies???

the justice system works, making Singapore free of rampant rape, murder,molest, robbery ... vandalism ... drug ...

so what's your problem if you don't plan break the law ....

I think Mr Shadrakes argument was that there is a reasonable possibility that Singapore acts too much in haste when it comes to the death penalty.

I get the VN connection ...

but ... this is SG

in a nearby country convicted criminals sentenced to death sentence have sneaked out and managed to kill more people because the wheels of justice haven't decided when to hang them after 20 years...

and in another country with death sentence abolished has seen murderers get pardoned only to kill some more and hey, they can't be hanged what ...

and in another almost every politician in power has pending cases as they been appealing and appealing ...

well, more in line with a quote from somebody who said... "an inefficient civil service (and justice system) is injustice to every ordinary citizen of the country " ... or something like that

The general who shot that man now runs a restaurant in the USA and regrets shooting that V.C. even though he had been caught killing civilians (hence the summary execution). Perhaps there's something in his experience to learn.

He's been dead over 15 years!

Stuff like this makes me VERY glad I'm not raising children here….what an uphill battle!

It wasn't about the General or VN or anything else. It was just to illustrate a point to Squirrel who seems to have missed it. I guess us Westerners have to realize quite a few people here in Singapore came from much sh1ttier places and don't mind the big brother approach.

I didn't miss it ..

I was a bit amused, especially when I compare the Philippines legal system

example, a local dignitary was caught on more than one phone camera doing a terrible thing ...

when the news spread, the said gentleman's legal camp started their defence with the words like this .... 'if the alleged incident really happened we like to seek a settlement, and for my client to be proven guilty I would like the court to make the recordings and the recording instruments to be submitted for forensic verification .... '

basically even a hundred pair of eyes saw the crime, a few phones recorded it, but by twisting the legal system the said dignitary is not bothered to even admit the crime ... because legally they are innocent

I would add Marcos JR too who famously declared that he is ready to be the next president of Philippines since the family is innocent because ... there are no more cases pending .... all cases were dismantled by making witnesses or evidences disappear or simplest solution for some cases was either the statute of limitation simply expired or, the defense proved the case filing process was wrong ...

and Philippines justice system I believe is largely based on US system

and in my country a ruling party politico cocked and waved a real pistol and threatened to kill an opposition guy, also caught on cameras, ... then the said VIP claimed it was a toy pistol, case solved ... whereas in Singapore law threatening with a toy pistol too is punishable, threatening with a real gun = death penalty ...

just comparing.

if Singapore had a lax legal system SG Inc maybe worse than the neighbors ...

no love lost I hope, re my tongue in cheek comment about the VN general ..'
