Hello everyone, my friend is renting a landed house .. and has offered me a small room to stay with him either for minor monthly rent or for free.
I wonder if there are any legal obstacles around this. Can you sub letting rent out a house in Singapore?
I just wanted to know what I should look out for moving in with my friend so neither of us get in trouble.
Do we need to have any contract in place if I pay rent?
How about if I stay in at no charge? Thanks!

Are you legally able to live in Singapore? If yes, then your friend can probably rent you a room. It depends what his TA says. Some of them say that additional roommates are OK if approved by landlord, others TA's, like mine, said nothing.

He can legally rent it to you if he registers the contract with URA (there will be tax implications) and if the duration is at least six months.

They also have tools for extracting the maximum amount of cash from your wallet... definitely not the cheapest place in town.

????
landed houses aren't always expensive
there are some which are a bit far from main road with rental going super low
like one I saw, a huge room in a 3 storey house at 800$, near Bartley road.
