Like Hong Kong, Singapore needs democracy

I found it a thought provoking read.

Ah! Look at who the author is:

Dr. Chee Soon Juan is the secretary-general of the Singapore Democratic Party

It sounded just like a refined version of a TRE article, which made me curious

I knows who he is, I was more interested in what his thoughts are.

Lee Kuan Yew, its first prime minister and architect of the country's one-party rule, said, in a stunning admission, that "without [foreigners], the jobs will not be there to begin with."

Whats so stunning about this? Isn't this obvious, that Singapore's prosperity is directly linked with foreigners? Its only people like him that get stunned.

Worst part is its not even a balanced view. This article has been written to an international audience, probably many of them dont know much about SG, so he needs to highlight the positives as well along with the negatives. Instead he has written it exactly like he would write it in TRE.

So, ironically, like he has mentioned in the article, this whole article is a "page of self interest"

That he said it at all. Because a reader might infer that he [LKY] is stating that making SG self-reliant has not yet come to fruition. I.e. that's why there is still a need for 'FT'. Politicians don't usually say things like that of their own historic plans.

Huh? He's an opposition politician, his role/function is to oppose the government: His job is not to celebrate the government's successes.

p.s. Over in the UK (GB) it is essentially two-party politics, Labour and the Tories. When one is in power the other's job is to attack their opponents policies and record. It is not the job of the opposition to float any alternatives (though they might choose to), or even publish a manifesto, until just before an election. The act of opposition is the primary job of the opposition. Maybe it doesn't work like that in other parliaments, but the SG one was directly modelled on Westminster
