Singapore Expats

Hey guys,

Is anyone doing anything for Australia Day on Sunday? 32 Aussie F. Iv'e been living and working in Singapore for the last 2 yrs and just realised that I haven't done anything on OZ day since iv'e been here.

I know there's a few get togethers around the island so if there are any females out there who fancy meeting up and grabbing a drink somewhere, let me know x

I've been in Singapore since 1991 and never bothered with an Australia day celebration (I'm an Aussie). It seems be something that the non Aussies want to join in on (they ask me where we are partying) but I really don't give a toss.

Given the growing sensitivity that straya day isn't a celebration for the Aborigines and the new generations' apathy, it's just a long weekend and an excuse to have a barbecue or go on a trip.

Fair enough. No worries guys!

Everybody has mixed feelings about the day. Keeping all into consideration, every nation has a history, many have seen exploitation of its original inhabitants, invasions, civil wars, political injustice, corrupt Governments... and we all know that sadly this is still the case in present day for many.

The arrival of the first fleet was 26th January, 1788, so this marks 'Australia Day'. The day the 'Brits' set foot in Port Jackson. There's only 22 countries in the world that the Brits haven't invaded or established a military presence in apparently!

What I like about Australia Day is the 'acknowledgement' of everything Australian and what is important to Australia - From the average Aussie in the street, our immigrants, our expats, our politicians.... Everyone has the right to celebrate and to acknowledge the day for how they see it, and to voice their opinion without being oppressed. That's what being Australian is all about.

It's a day where people rally in the streets with national pride, it's a day where people lobby outside parliament or Town Hall in Sydney about issues of national importance, human rights, changing of referendums, acknowledgement of Australian's who have down us proud, award ceremonies, citizenship ceremonies, concerts, parades... and yes, a 'day off' at the beach or the pub having a beer, or a barbeque.... because that's our right to do so.

Australia was hit with a very harsh reality late last year when Man Monis walked into that Lindt Cafe, held innocent people hostage, used them as human shields while he demanded an IS flag to be brought to him... He was responsible for his own death and that of 2 others and then made a Martyr by the Islamic State...
We have then witnessed Paris being hit, British, American, and now Japanese hostages being taken around the world....by people who 'hate' our free and open society...
If this is one day where Australia can show that we won't be tainted by this radical, extremist BS.... and we can celebrate our liberties in peace, then I'll cheers to that too.

maybe you can celebrate Republic day with all the Indians

P.S I really need an Aussie bloke to login to some server and do something for me,instead he's lying on a boat somewhere beer in hand.
