They used to be common.... I ran over one by accident about 20 years ago out in Jurong and some friends had a black and white in Portsdown where they were very common sights.

The 15 years I lived in Seletar Camp at the end of Jalan Kayu, I had a whole nest of black spitting cobras living behind the concrete culvert that formed the support for my front sidewalk & driveway. They lived there for many years. Fortunately, we rarely ever saw one of them as they usually see, hear and feel the vibrations of humans long before we get to where they are. Only occasionally did I meet up with one and that was usually when they were on the prowl and ended up in the runoff drains that surround the black & whites out there. those drains are about 2 feet deep by only around 8 inches wide and they catch the runoff from the roofs. As my children were quite small back then we kept a good eye out for them but my dog was really the watch dog and would notify us early on before we even were outside. I usually caught them and took them out to the field and just let 'em go. (In 15 years there I never saw a rat! - a staple of their diet.)

I also had the occasional Python as well, usually smaller ones but we knew there were larger ones in the ceilings because I managed to get up into the ceilings to find out where the leaking roofing tiles were and there were shed skins there up to around 2 m long. The largest I ever caught was only about 1.5 m long and maybe 1.5'' in diameter. Again, I'd just catch them and transport them to somewhere a little more ulu in the camp an let them go. (Usually around one of the ponds at the Seletar Base Golf course which was only a block away from my house.

I also caught two monitor lizards in my yard. Both seemed to acquire a taste for my dogs dry dog food and she would raise a ruckus in the wee hours of the morning. The first one I caught was almost 1.5 m long and was a big mother. The second about 1.25 m. Both went to the National Zoo (what they did with them I don't know). Probably took them to Changi Point and let 'em go. Had all kinds of critters out there. I really miss the place.

My FiL always tried to get me to try to shoot one of the many flying foxes that regularly circled the big old Eugenia tree that grew in my yard eating the fruit from the tree. These things were around 5.5' wingspreads and my FiL swore that they were good eating.

tsk tsk, the snakes partner will hunt you down now turn into a female dance with you for a bit take you to bed and bite you to death ( at least that's what happens in popular Bollywood movies involving snakes)

I can believe a Flying Fox is good to eat. They loved them in PNG.

This specific spot where it happened is on a street directly adjacent to some patches of the jungle so not that really surprising.
