Singapore Expats

Hi all,

I have 4 years of experience and I have been offered a job of 3500 SGD per month basic with 1 year contract. I did a basic search and found out that it is too less for my experience. Also; the company is not providing relocation assistance and will pay only for the employee pass. I had thought of refusing the offer; then I read on somewhere that it is important to first get foot on the door.

Should I take the offer for now; and change the job 4-5 months later? Can we switch jobs once we get the employee pass; like in the case of USA's H1-B visa; once the visa is approved; its easy to switch job with a new employer. Is this the same case in singapore as well?

Hoping to get suggestions.

Employment passes in Singapore are not like H1-B. If you change jobs you must get a new employment pass.

And, if you are being underpaid, and especially considering your origin, you aren't going to get an employment pass anyway. Although there is a minimum salary, it doesn't mean you qualify just because you make the minimum.

The expectation is you get a salary rise as your experience grows, so if you have 4 years experience but are being paid at an entry level wage, then this will seriously lower your probability of getting a pass.

One other thing... it really pisses off employers to hire someone, only to have them leave a few months later. If you're not going to stick with it for a while, then don't come.

Many basic metrics are absent: Age, industry, position, home country, current salary, accommodation required, and so on. So the 'should I take the job?' cannot be considered.
Neither can the question of considering whether it makes a wise career move.

That aside, do not figure on job-hopping in SG. Some people try it, quit one job, hope to get another better one, but the pass for the latter gets refused and they are then faced with having to leave SG pronto. Not an enviable scenario, esp. if you're locked into a housing tenancy.

It's probably fair to say that foreign workers are allowed into SG to do an 'in demand' job that requires skills only foreigner's have. The scope for job-hopping is very restricted, and prone to risk, especially after just a few months.

I'd suggest any first position has to stand on it's own merits, as something you're highly content with, if not excited. In any move as large as this don't sell yourself short at step-one, only to find step-two cannot be reached.

--- a work visa in SG is 'stand-alone' to a single job. Not transferable, and job-hopping is frowned upon.

Yeah, need to know more info. Like, where are you coming from and which industry/job role are you looking at? Sometimes things do work differently for different industries but job hopping is never a nice thing.

Age-26 years; Bachelor
Industry- Information technology
Position-Technical Consultant
Home country-India
Accommodation required -Yes
Current Salary - 1250000 INR per annum

Then you should definitely not take the offer. I would aim closer to $6k
