Singapore Expats

Hello Everyone,

Just got my first rejection letter after 5 months and a couple of weeks of waiting.

I don't know why was the exact reason for the rejection, but it may have a bit to do with education, race, etc. Below are my credentials:

- Applied Dec 13 2016
- Rejected Jun 1 2017

- Male
- 30 years old
- Puerto Rican (American citizen) (Classified as "Latin" Race)
- 4 years, 10 months in Singapore
- Upgraded from S Pass to E-Pass
-Worked for 1 local company, and 2 international companies thus far.
- Salary 70K Annum (was 36K when I first arrived)
- Former US military veteran
- No degree when I arrived, but a lot of industry experience (Media Industry)
- Got my degree in 2015, while working full-time (probably one of the reason why my pass was upgraded)
- Volunteer at a local no profit related to my field, currently a committee member. Been there over 4 years. (Chairman wrote a letter or recommendation, but that didn't help).
- Completed a couple of certs while Singapore institutions and pursuing a Masters.
- Have 4 Letters of Assessments
- Dating local Singapore Chinese girl, but no plans for marriage.

Just wondering wondering what Singapore is currently looking for PRs. Are they essentially also need for me to settle down and have a kid before even looking at my application seriously? Just a thought.

What are your takes on this?

Singapore is looking for talented professionals, who will take PR first and then convert to Citizen in future.

1. Is your degree from a local university? What is your degree in?
2. How long are you on the E Pass?

Degree from a US university, in Film.
E-Pass is until October 2017

My guess? The gahmen sees you in this way.

1. You got your degree through distance learning, and the authorities here don't make much of an attempt to differentiate degrees from "reputed" unis and legitimate accredited online degrees. Your degree probably didn't count for much.
2. You're the wrong flavor... you don't fit into the race boxes that define Singapore, and I judge that Singapore deems homogeneous races to be better than all sorts of splinter groups that might stir up trouble and demand more rights.
3. You're in "film", something that is not viewed as "important" in Singapore. We want PMET's... techies, pharma, nano bio, big finance. Film? You'll probably produce something the gahmen will have to censor.
4. You are an American. The chances of you giving up American citizenship to take on Singapore citizenship are slim. Therefore, PR is not a stepping stone to citizenship for you, another negative.
5. You've been here five years, still single, and no male children cannon fodder for NS. The gahmen judges that you haven't "settled down" in five years.

They would like you a lot better if you were Chinese, married, had a boy or two for NS, and held a citizenship you wouldn't mind giving up.

Long time lurker, rejected twice previously for PR. Wanted to get some opinions on my profile and whether I should apply again:

Age: 45
Race/Nationality: Korean/American born
Degree: BA from top 25 university in US
PEP Pass
In Singapore since: 07/2012
2 Children- boy and girl- both born in Singapore (boy just born 30 days ago)
Wife: PRC on dependent pass
Salary: 12k+/month
Field of work: FSI software/IT
Intention: Use PR as pathway for citizenship if possible.

-Have been doing a lot of local work at grassroots level via my local church. Almost all of my friends are local Singaporeans. All encourage to keep trying but after 2 rejects....am thinking the message is loud and clear. Thoughts?

The PEP might be a negative, not sure that you can even apply with that or who would fill out the employers declaration on the form. The PEP is usually for high earning foreign professionals who go from job to job. They might think you're not a stayer. Are actually employed full time and have been for some time?
