Singapore Expats

Any foreigner here who acquired singapore citizenship and reliable for National Service? I really don't want to do 'NS' because I believe Singapore is not a ideal place for me and I don't see myself living here forever. I'm planing to move to US or Canada after my high school. Is there a way out of this and will it pose any serious consequences on my return to singapore in the future?

You're a Singapore citizen already, without dual citizenship?! You're screwed, my friend, there's no way you can escape NS now.

If you're a dual citizen, you need to haul ass to the other country and stay there until you can get rid of your Sing citizenship, which is not very easy if you haven't done your NS...

what are my chances of getting rid of my singapore citizenship? and under what circumstances will they allow me to renounce?

Need input, my friend. So are you only a Singaporean citizen, or do you have another citizenship somewhere else? I presume you are in Singapore now, how old are you and when does your passport expire?

Are you a immigration officer or something? anyway I'm 17 and soon I'm going to be Canadian PR. I plan to continue my studies there. My Singapore passport expire in a year and i believe i ll be in Canada by then.

I don't recall all the details exactly, but there is an article on the US State Department website about US and Sing dual citizenship. Basically it says that Singapore simply does not recognize dual citizenship and that NS is strongly enforced. In fact, all males, upon reaching the age of 16 1/2 must seek permission from the Sing govt in order to leave the country.

If you do leave the country and do not fulfill your NS obligation, be sure that you don't come back to Sing, for you will be arrested, and you will do your national service. As I read it, you cannot renounce your Singapore citizenship to avoid NS.

Absolutely 100% correct! Don't even think of it! You can't renounce before you reach 21 becos thats the age when you attain majority by Singapore Law and by then you should have finished your NS or gotten deferment on the basis of a bond that ensures your return! So you see the catch!

Do they treat foreign born singaporeans and locals equally on this matter?

This is my third reply and I'm still confused. You are a Singaporean citizen (only) with a Canadian PR (only), correct? If yes, and you're 17, I'm rather surprised that the government is willing to let you out of the country. If you can haul ass to Canada, you will need to find out right quick what you need to do to become a Canadian citizen so you can stay there.

dude, I can live in canada with my PR status you know! By the way, I have be thinking, if you change your name in Canadian Passport, will the immigration people find out when you enter singapore again?

I will confess to not knowing the finer details of Canadian immigration law, but unless I am very much mistaken you will have a problem when your Singaporean passport expires. You can't get a new one until you do your NS, and I don't think the Canadians will extend your PR without a passport. This is why you need citizenship.

As for coming into Singapore on a Canadian passport, it will probably have your place of birth listed, which may set off a few alarm bells... I wouldn't risk it until you've gotten your Sing citizenship renounced.
