Singapore Expats

I need to get internet connection done soon at home. I live with two other flatmates and one of them has starhub. I was told by a friend that i should consider Singtel because it allows me to use broadband as well as dial up.
i dont have a fixed line at home at the moment and dont think i need one, however, i am using a borrowed lap top and may get an PC fixed at home.

What will i be using the internet for? mostly surfing as i do a lot of internet research. Sorry if i sound very ignorant but other than surfing what else would one use the internet for? Oh yes, downloading music! and yes, watching clips etc... yes, come to think of it, there are some free courses on the internet and i would like to use that..hmmn i'm a bit green behind the years.. so ..

The thing is, i guess i would like advice on
- Who to use- Starhhub or Singtel broadband
- whats the cost factor- which is cheaper
- which is more reliable

If your flatmate already has starhub cable service, then what you should do is buy a wireless router like the Linksys. This will allow every computer in the house to share the starhub connection. Starhub doesn't care, and unless you are all downloading gobs of movies or music all the time, the speed will be just fine.

I'm confused . Your flatmate has starhub but there's no fixed line? So he/she using starhub broadband right? If so you can share the connection, don't have to add new ones.

honey u can call me a dumb brunnette if u like ... i dont know these things. we have cable wiring in all our bedrooms and she said she had broadband subscription but isnt using it right now cos her lap top is broken or something. We are not sharing anything,,, i dont want to get involved with sharing anything with her if i can help it... u know what i mean cos i dont like her very much and the less interaction, the better.

someone told me i can 'ride' on her bb connection, what will i need on the lap top i have to be able to do this, The lap top i have is a friend's and she has starhub but for dial up, not for broadband. can i still try?

To "ride" her broadband, you need a wireless router. And that's not all, your laptop must be wireless capable. If your laptop does not have that, you can buy a wireless adapter. And yes, she may know about it.

Yes... unless you hide it in the closet!

Right now, there should be a brownish color cable modem box somewhere near where the cable enters the house. The cable goes in, and out comes an RJ45 internet cable, which must be the cable that runs around the house.

To put in wireless you connect the wireless router to the cable modem, then plug the internet cable that was in the modem back into the router. A quick set up and voila... it is done.

It is easy to do and undo... and cheaper... even if you give her a few bux... than buying a whole new access.
