Hello, I just relocated from the US to SG and working as an EP. I heard that you could apply for PR half year later and so wondered if my background could possibly give me a chance to make it.

Race: Chinese
Citizenship: China
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Education: Bachelor's degree from top 20 US university.
Job: Senior Software Engineer
Length of stay in Singapore: just came last week
Salary: 140k base salary and 60k bonus and RSU
Pass: EP
PR Application: First time.

Is there any chance that I might get accepted in half year?

Just because the website says you can apply half a year later doesn’t mean it’ll be successful. Common advice is to wait for at least 3 years of tax assessments before applying. Chances are LOW because your stay is way too short to truly determine if you want to sink roots here.

You'll also notice some YouTube Videos or forum discussions stating they got it after working for 1 year or something. Here's the thing: They are Malaysian Chinese. Highly favorable for PR in Singapore if you fit that profile.

Further to mr.green's post, the reason that Malaysian Chinese are the most preferred is that culturally they are virtually 100% identical as quite often there are relatives on both sides of the causeway as Singapore used to be part of Malaysian before 1965 making assimilation virtually instantaneous. There is a large difference culturally speaking when comparing to Mainland China Chinese folks. Shall we say the Chinese'ness is considerably more diluted here and more of a broad mixture of other cultures as well even though it's a predominantly an ethnically Chinese country demographically speaking. The founding fathers ensured that no race would become the master race and that is why the language of government here is English and there are 3 other accepted languages that all government messages are published in. Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.

In addition to what MOCHS & mr.green have already said, to be quite honest your chances are virtually zero at the moment both for the reasons already given and additionally, Singapore is flush with EP holders who are already here with more experience. A basic degree and a Sr. as you claim, but only on 140k SGD is pretty low. What you are telling ICA is you are buying toto chance only. But if gambling is your style, being single, $100 a pop for applications is nothing but a donation to the government. You cannot write that 'contribution' to the government off of your tax return so you don't gain anything there as well.

What I'd suggest is taking some time to research our archives here before you waste your time and eventually frustrated at the rejections.

If OP wants some stats, my colleague & her husband are ex-PRC nationals. They arrived after SARS in 2003, only applied for PR together with their baby in 2008 which they got, then applied for citizenship in 2010 which was approved.

However, it was easier more than 10 years ago. The criteria has tightened in recent years and has become difficult. I don’t know of any PRC nationals that applied for PR recently.

How much longer do I need to stay and how much money I should earn to get a 50/50 chance? Say I spend the next 2 years here and then make 160k base a year. Would that be a solid chase?

With 160k base and either 24 consecutive months on an EP (e.g. on your first renewal OR 3 tax assessments (e.g. 24 consecutive months on an EP but spanning across three tax years.) No need to have a tax liability on the first tax assessment as it might only be partial employment the first tax year, more or less. Add to that you are ethnic Chinese, the largest quota group but third ranked in desirability, within the group, due to assimilation problems in the past due in part to Singapore's cultural dilution as compared to your more strict cultural indoctrinations. Malaysian Chinese, have the easiest route as they, by virtue of being, in a lot of cases, related to Singaporeans prior to Singapore obtaining sovereignty in 1965.

So yes, stay a solid two years and increase your base, I'd give you probably 70% or maybe better depending on your employer. Don't look desperate but jumping the gun. They will be scratching their heads to try to figure out what may be hidden. Immigration officers are like that. (I used to work in the same office with the US INS officer here in Singapore from 1988 to 1991 so know how they think, to some degree, as I was a refugee caseworker working under UNHCR at the time.

Welcome to Singapore and good luck. Give it the time needed, anecdotally speaking, and you should have reasonably smooth sailing.

Many years back, my colleague (Senior Engineer) from China office ask for transfer to Singapore office. As he heard can apply PR after staying 6 mth.
After 2-3 yrs stay, he still cannot get PR. He pack and went back to China.

Stay for at least 5 years with good contribution and achievement to Singapore society, you have to build your profile here to show ICA you want to root down here, you have to show that you integrate with the local community.

To be frank the salary is not as important as building a good profile with social integration.

Suggestion:

1. To apply after you made a major achievement to boost Singapore economy or community development, or your company does such works.

2. Attend short courses or profession certificates course with NUS, NTU. (I assume you have no time to attend one more part time MBA or long term course)

3. Get married, have kids and buy property here.

Buying property doesn't do anything toward approval for PR or SGC.

- working and living in a Chinese bubble (no integration efforts)
- a question: does the candidate really want to make Singapore his new home? or maybe he only wants to enjoy being a PR before the company brings him back to China?
- potentially, many other candidates with a similar profile
- working in a industry that is not seen as super useful (in contrary to R&D, building modern infrastructure, etc)

I was brought here by a US company with more than 15,000 employees globally. Hopefully that's a plus
