Any idea how to alleviate sunburns?

I've been taking advantage of the summer by doing lots of swimming and going to the beach, but it appears I may have fun too close to the sun today because I ended up with a pretty bad sunburn.
I've already applied aloe to calm the skin, but what I am concerned about are the Tan lines, so does anybody know if there's a way to even out the skin tone?
