Singapore Expats

Hello Dear Community Members,

I am 44, with three kids (2 four year old boys and 1 nine year old girl). I am in process of getting an offer in Singapore (employment pass). Is there any chance that I might get a PR in 6-7 years? I see that getting a PR is very very difficult in Singapore, would like to hear from you.

I am Indian by the way.

Without knowing your industry, and employment history among other things like credentials, it would be almost impossible to hazard any kind of guess at this point in time (definitely not betting odds). You are right on the cusp at 44 IF you already had, say, 6 years here already under your belt. But to look at getting PR at 50 is it almost unheard of unless you are bring an awful lot of bacon to the table. I was an outlier but a much earlier time (mid-1990's with already 11 years here (but only employed here about three at the time (8 years offshore drilling industry). But by then I'd been married 10 years to a local girl and had two children with her. I was almost 48 at the time. Not very likely to pull it off today unless you are a brain surgeon or a rocket scientist or better.

If your main purpose to move here is to get a PR, then most likely you won't get there based on what you've shared.

If I were in your place, I'd probably evaluate how much money I could probably save up from this posting. Then see if it's worthwhile based on your current situation and financial goals.

I have serious doubts over the sincerity of your question. Going by your previous posts, you appear to have lived in Singapore for different periods of time and are of multiple different ages...

Don't think so due to the age, schooling is expensive, housing is expensive, so is food and cars and taxi. Cannot think of a good reason for you to move unless you're getting a fat paycheck.
Cost of living is very high in Singapore

One of my past Indian colleagues works in cloud computing and has a PEP, more than 200k SGD salary he rents a condo with 6k monthly rent and 30k annual school fees. His PR was just rejected. He is now applying for Australia PR. He told me, if the PR doesn't come through, he will go back to India as India salaries are also quite similar to SG salaries, for his niche skills.

People will move virtually anywhere for a high enough paycheck (including an oil rig in some distant part of the world with cold, rough seas), but Singapore is also a good lifestyle destination. If money wasn't a constraint Singapore would top my list of places where I'd want to reside.

If you own your property and your kids are already out of school then I don't think that costs are that high (I wouldn't want a car and I take public transport over taxis). The only thing that sticks out is the high cost of booze.

You cannot own a nice house in Singapore with a backyard and space. You cannot own a nice car in Singapore. You cannot go on a long drive etc.

Singapore is great for a short stint and it is very efficient and practical if you want to save lots of money.

But to settledown, no way. I mean locals have family here so it is their home. But for an foreigner to come and settledown, there are way better places out there.

I've had a big house with big garden and a nice car which which I have taken long drives. But that no longer interests me as much, at least not at this point in time. For some this might be the dream and something to look forward to, for me it's quite the opposite.

I would love to return to Singapore, get a small but ample apartment that I can just lock up and leave on a cruise or long trip somewhere without worrying about a thing. Car? Never for a second have I wanted a car (apart from when I was carrying wine...) and it felt like a massive bonus not to even need one. For some freedom is owning a car, for me freedom was not having one (in Singapore that is).

People say "the grass is always greener..." and they have a point. Many Singaporeans would love to move to Australia, Europe or the US (I've already lived in all these places). I for one would love to move to Singapore (again). There's just no other place like it.
