i am in the process of gettgin furniture made in Jakarta. I need to freight the furniture from Jakarta to singapore (door to door with insurance). I have about half a small container.

The quotes i have received are in the order of US$2000. this seems extremely high.

Has anyone shipped anything from jakarta and can recommend a good shipping company? How much did it cost?

US$2000 seems ok for door to door, it surely won't go dramatically lower, maybe a few hundred less at most. Remember, you get what you pay for. Ask for details about the insurance and what it covers, and when the coverage starts and ends. Make sure the company has their own office in Indo, that they own, not an agent.

Door to Door service is generally used for shipping into Indonesia, not shipping out of Indonesia.
US$2000 for a container sounds expensive. But, if you get a breakdown of the services you are getting, I may sound reasonable. Here is how I look at it.

1. Container Clearing charges in Singapore US$400 (estimate)
2. Contaner Freight US$400 (estimate)
3. Local container port ??
4. Furniture packing or crate ?
5. Loading container charge in Indonesia
6. Unloading container charge in Singapore

Add up all the services ... US$2000 may sound OK.....

Don't forget:

1/ Transportation cost (to / from port)
2/ Forklift rental charges (to get the item out from Keppel Distripark)
3/ Import permit charge
4/ Insurance (this has gone crazy over th last few years)
5/ Wharfage charges
6/ Agent charge for arranging all this

To the OP:

These are the fixed costs that have to be paid. Should you ship more items, these cost would be spread out over all the pieces and it would not be that bad. The cheapest way to ship things is by utilising a whole container as you would avoid heavy break-bulk fees.
