Singapore Expats

I'm going to relocate to Singapore in the next few months. Having lived all our lives in temperate climates, my family has a large amount of winter clothing, such as sweaters (jumpers), overcoats & other woolen goods that obviously aren't necessary in Singapore and don't fare well in humid weather. Are there places where we can store them while we are in Singapore that they won't get mouldy and take up room in our apartment? I know in the US, many dry cleaning shops will store fur coats etc. during the summer. If there are such places, how much will this cost? Since we may be there for several years, it might be better in the long run just to get rid of most of it and get new ones if & when we leave. Thanks for your help.

Buy some plastic vacuum bags and pack your winter belongings in there. You can get them at Linen N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond. Don't worry about space - these bags suck out so much air that they squish down to a few inches.

That's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion - I've ordered some from the internet (www.spacebag.com, if anyone is interested) so we can wrap them up before we move. But I'd also like to know about getting these things out of the house if possible, along with other goods, such as old photos & old letters, that I don't want to throw away but don't need to have around the house. Any ideas about where we can store things? I gather that "Cold Storage" in Singapore does not necessarily mean what it means elsewhere.

Will you travel back to the US on homeleave? If so, is there a place you can leave some of your woolens behind? Space is generally at a premium here, you may want to store some with Gramma for example rather than bring it all to Singapore. I hope you have a good transition into Singapore.

Cold Storage is a supermarket chain in Singapore, not a storage facility.

Know what? I just visited a self-storage facility here for my own trading business. They do have facilities for "cold-storage" of winter items as well.

I am already in Singapore and would like to vacuum pack some clothing to store at home. No Line N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond around here. Is there a place we could take our stuff to be vacuum packed?

All you need to do it go to Handy-Fix and buy some Vacuum Storage Bags and use your vacuum cleaner. Works a treat. I use them for storage of winter clothes (especially sweaters) as well as for the storage of quilts and other puffy types of bed linens, doona's, duvets, or whatever they are called in various countries. They come in various sizes.

They also sell them in assorted sizes at Daiso (Plaza Singapura) for $2 a pop.
