based on my knowledge, you are not required to do any national service even if you take the citizenship. Only your son will have to do it if he is singapore PR or Citizenship holder.

Remember Australia does not allow dual citizenship. I dont think you can become a citizen streight away anyway.

Unfortunately this is not allowed by Singapore; you will have to renounce all existing citizenships before you can become a Singaporean.

Or that's what the law says. In practice things are more fuzzy, as in a great many countries you can't renounce your own citizenship even if you want to, and you don't necessarily need to tell the Garmin everything you do or hold... although that would, of course, be illegal.

You're right though in that the wording has changed, but you will still be "advised" to renounce your previous citizenship and required to take an "Oath of Renunciation".

splatted...unless you are very familiar with the ways of singapore, don't jump into the citizenship boat. getting singaporean citizenship may be fairly easy for you given that you are marrying a citizen, but the laws of singapore are extremely untenable when it comes to having another nationality.

i'm not quite that sure about singaporean citizenship giving you more than an aussie one. maybe short term savings and such, but in the long haul, the repercussions may be a lot more serious than you think.

i misconstrued your last statement. i agree that the losses sustained in losing your aussie citizenship is far greater than gaining a singaporean one.

Yes children that are born by citizen are automatically given citizenship but if born overseas should register with embassy within a month or else no citizenship.

splatted: this is in response to your original post. i do think you may have to serve national service. that on the other hand is dependent on how old you are when you get your PR or citizenship. do check with the ministry of defense before you do anything. their website might provide some helpful information.

or...maybe not. hmm...
