Hi, ladies -- new here, too (from U.S.). Also a homemaker, have a 3.5 year old son, and currently living in Kembangan area.

Have been trying to get out every day, and check one more thing off my errrands list. But am also struggling with trying to find what I need. I can even imagine how many miles I have logged in the malls, trying to find the simplest stuff! Still keep looking for a one-stop shop like Target! (so far no luck, ha ha)

May I ask wow are your children adjusting to the move?

Okay, "bargain" lady - -

1) any place that sells baskets of all sizes (for storage)? Wasn't really in the mood to pay $50-60 per basket though. I already tried Lim's and Ikea (still not quite what I had in mind)

2) looking for bookshelves and storage type things with drawers. Preferably made of teak (or another funky wood), & something that doesn't seem like it was made on an assembly line(mass produced and bland). But also a decent price (not sure what "decent price" is, though! lol)

So.....any suggestions? Or am I even being realistic?

maybe....give it a try at Chinatown area? The shophouses over there sells cool furniture. How about Harvey Norman at Millenium Walk or Carrefour at Suntec City?

By the way, where are u staying? Maybe I can suggest somewhere nearer your place.

Wow - I have been to many a Harvey Norman since moving here (my husband had to find his beloved TV, lol), but not Millenium Walk. Do they sell stuff other than electronics?

I also have not been to Carrefour - but was planning to go to Suntec City Mall tomorrow! I'll check it out!

I live in Kembangan, right next to the MRT station (a necessity, since we do not have a car).

1) Is it Giant that you mean? I actually have one just one MRT stop from me, in Bedok. I had some fun in there but still no luck with baskets (I'm trying to find stuff like you'd find in Target)

2) No, still didn't find a playgroup or daycare center. I feel so bad for him. He soooo misses his friends, and is dying to make new ones. I just don't take any decision lightly when it involves the care of my son, and the money paid to do it (not that anyone does, of course!). But a playgroup is an easier decision, 'cause I can be there.

a) Re: St. Georges Church: Do you know if that playgroup involves kids in the 3 yr range?

b) Do you know if it's near an MRT station? (if you don't know, no biggie - I'll look it up in the phone book)

3) Have you tried Baby Town Singapore? Their website is: http://www.babytown.com.sg/index.html I haven't used them, but they seem to have a ton of stuff (and they deliver!). 4) I *don't* get out without a stroller! After being here for three weeks, and dragging my poor son on foot everywhere (our usual stroller is WAY too big to use in malls/MRT's) I realized that we really needed to buy a more city friendly stroller. I did some heavy research and found exactly what I was looking for. Heck, the lady at the store even let me test drive it on the escalator outside her store (I was extremely nervous, since in the U.S. they don't allow strollers on escalators). She came with me and showed me how to do it (w/him in it). And now that I've done it a few billion times it's a piece of cake). Btw...that Baby Town Singapore store has a bunch of strollers priced from $25 all the way to $799.

I'm also a new in Singapore, a mother of two boys. We're moving to the Tanjong Rhu area soon. My problem is finding a local primary school in the area. Not much choice and apparently no placements within these schools anyway! I'm literally tearing my hair out with these schooling system!
Still, aside from that, we are enjoying singapore very much. The weather is always great (even when it rains)

Its a major adjustment as I'm sure you all feel the same.

But to carry on with your link, I know where you can get good teak furnitures without breaking the bank. Have you tried Dempsey Road? The old army barracks have lots of furniture warehouses. They sell mainly teak furnitures, chests, statues etc.. The type you see when you visit indonesia. Maybe you will find something you like there. I'm still struggling to furnish my apartment. So far I have done nothing!!!

Sorry to hear about your schooling problems. I'm a little luckier - mine isn't old enough to be required to attend school yet, so I have a little more time to choose (or opt for none at all ).
