Are you fluent? All I managed, after going out with my Japanese gf for six years, was a few sound bytes. I tend to be say "nani" a lot. It's a very tough language to master.

Any language is tough to master -- me, I'm still working on my Osakan yakuza accent. (本間やな．アホが見るブタのケツ．) But spoken Japanese isn't all that tough, learning to read and write is a bit more challenging... although I did finally accomplish my objective of plowing through Yukio Mishima's Temple of the Golden Pavilion in the original this year.

No, it's a site for Japanese people so what did you expect...?

Depends. The u is pronounced short and weak if at all, especially at the ends of words, but more clearly if you're speaking politely. So you say hello to "Susumu-san" when handing over your business card, and slur "S's'mu" after the third bottle of sake.
