Singapore Expats

Hi I have a 5 year old girl (half french) and we are looking for french speaking children in the same age group to play and hang out with, so she can practise her French. I will even babysit your kids!

There are French people in almost every part of Singapore. May be you should give some details about your location, that might help...

We live in the East, near Singapore Expo.

I have tried emailing the person in charge of the Playgroup at the French Association (according to thier website it's for children below 6 years of age, my daughter is 5)

But I was appalled by her reply, " sorry we do not accept Non French People. It's only for French mothers and French children and we only speak French plus she is to old for the group"

If my husband is French, therefore our child is French!
I did explained that my child and I speaks French (of course not as fluent as a native speaker)why else would we want to hang out with them

It's sad to say that my daughter is being discriminated just because I am local.

What you describe is quite surprising.

May I ask, are you sure it's not a misunderstanding?

The French Association is open to anyone who wants to join. In fact this year there are people from 22 different nationalities. You don't have to speak French to be a member, but it helps of course.

The French Association offers activities to its members (visits, etc) and to the members' children. So there is no reason why your daughter could not join AS LONG AS YOU ARE A MEMBER.

If you want to become a member you can download the form on the website (for non-French nationals it costs S$ 100 per year).

If you still feel something is wrong, may be you can PM me a copy of the email you received, and I will find out with the people who run the French Association.

Hi, sorry to post such a late reply as I just relocated to Singapore earlier this year. I've a 2.5 years son who speaks French, like your case, he & his father are French but I'm not. My son speaks French but as he is only 2.5 years old, thus, his vocabulary is limited, he will be going to French school in September. I'm in a similar situation. Have been using Little Pim DVDs which are quite good to supplement a french class we took in the U.S. My four year old's vocabulary has increased nicely since we started playing them in the morning while I fix breakfast. They also get me motivated to use the vocabulary etc. more during our day....

Hi, does anyone know of a French tutor who can tutor my 7 year old? She has a fascination with the French language and is desperate to know more than the few words she does. We live in the East and would love to get her a tutor once or twice a week to capitalise on her interest. Maybe even an older secondary child student could do it?

I just started taking my toddler to Alliance Française twice a week, its good fun she mixes well in a french environment, no real lessons just playing and drawing etc
