Would it be out of line to draw the following comparison:


George Best - - - - - - Paul Gascoigne - - - - - - Wayne Rooney.

All three excellent players with the capacity for self-destruction, therefore not being able to show their best for a long time - hopefully Rooney will wisen up and not reach the depths that the otehr two had.


Shame I don't remmber him playing in '74 against Germany, would have been great to see.

slightly ironic that soon after they introduce 24 hour drinking Best dies.

I did hear something about he was actually quite shy & at one point he was made to live in a see through house, he started drinking to make it more bearable. But only hearsay, can't seem to find any evidence on Google.

He was certainly one of the best footballers of his time but the majority of his life a sad old drunk. He had a second chance when he had his liver transplant and then carried on boozing. Selfish loser.

May be a bit harsh as he's popped his clogs but I dont know why alot of Brits hero worship people like this? The death of Reggie Kray, a notorious gangster, had a huge turnout at his funeral. Why? He killed and maimed people. Odd.

To cross over to another thread - worhsip a drug trafficker . . . makes no sense.

I don't think anyone was worshiping a drug trafficker in the other thread, but many do the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Hendrix (almost ever rock/pop icon ever) would have probably face the death penalty if they had been caught in Singapore.

But back to the thread above; I agree great footballer, but so what. I think he wasted his talent as much as we wasted our money paying for his new liver.
