I understand from a 'flying friend' that SIA stewardesses are actually banned from wearing thongs - its granny panties or don't fly. :-|

Talk about a silly rule.

What else do you ladies discuss about? I don't think I have discussed yet with a male friend about what underwear I wear... :P

Surprisingly, she brought it up.

She was griping about how controlled their uniform standards are - from make up to nail polish color (I think there are only 3 'approved' shades) to length of hair, to stockings and underwear.

I just found it ridiculous. As I would find you, if you did, by any chance, start discussing underwear issues with Eric at Oosters. :o :P

That's indeed part of their marketing. Whenever I enter in their aircrafts I feel "at home" and it has to do with this level of standardization. A bit like hotels which have the same furniture all over the world.

Did she tell you that they all have to use the same perfume, which is designed especially for SIA? (serious!)

No, she never mentioned it, but I suppose that explains why she doesn't spray on a nuclear sized cloud of Miracle before her flights, and only when we go out drinking! Must ask her about that.

I can understand that there needs to be some guidelines so staff look and behave in the desired manner, but underwear restrictions??? I'm sorry, but to the best of my knowledge, most passengers don't get to peek at whats under the kebayas! Not on flight, at least.... :P

The only concern here maybe that ladies underclothes sometimes show lines through outer clothing. However, the kebayas are quite 'solid' and girls underwear does not press through. Therefore I can see little if any justification for appears to be an intrusive rule unless they are thinking of those mercifully rare occasions when passengers and crew have to dispatch to the life raft and women might feel they need to remove some clothing (putting aside their blushes of course) in order to move more freely. Could I suggest you ask your friend what the reasoning behind this is, assuming she has been given one?

Plavt.

And the same nailpolish . . . I belive it's a good thing, actually, it's called a uniform for a reason - it looks very professional - despite the comments on the dim board I feel quite at ease with SQ and this is also due to their selection criteria.

You mean the fact that they're cute? I thank you as indirectly you've paid me a compliment albeit a little late. Yes, (secret's out) I too was a Singapore girl among other things many years ago but don't remember an undies rule but back then thongs were a non issue. Nail polish wasn't restricted to 3 shades then but compulsory and they were anal about hair styles, either in a bun or short.

Surprisingly that's the main topic of discussion at the SADC - last time we had just finished discussed Wham's Y-fronts and were on out way to Eric's long-johns (yes, we were surprised as well).

GC, in my younger years - actually up to when I met Mrs 'Cluse, many of my 'closer' friends were from SQ. Kind of figures when you travel most of the time and see the same people, end up in foreign places . . . I am still friends with one - but Mrs 'Cluse refuses to fly SQ . . . :? ???
I do find them very different now to then, however, but still better trained than most.

It is just a bt sad to read the other thread and the job is really seen as a trolley dolley where covering up your pimples and shocking English is paramount.
