Singapore Expats

I am seriously thinking of doing it after a bad eye infection, which was very likely caused by wearing of contact lenses extensively. Am wondering if anyone has any contacts or recommendation of reliable doctors in Singapore or even Malaysia. Also, any advice or precaution or tips will be much appreciated too. Thanks!

Are you serious? Bangkok specialists are better than Singapore's?

I'm willing to plunk thousands to rid these glasses for good. But I worry on the low percentage success rate - yes, 85% is darn low for me still.

I did lasik with Singapore eye institute. Very satistied with their service (all kindness and compassionate as I am the world's greatest nervous wreck). Still recovering and am experiencing halo (not within control of surgeon).

Price is not any cheaper than USA but I tend to feel more comfortable having such procdures done in home country.

It is totally up to you if you feel Bangkok may be more suitable (lower cost, resort-like recuperation) option. Do bear in mind that you get what you pay for. One of the reason for the lower price in Bangkok is that the same blade is used on ten eyes/patients (not sure which one, eye or patient??) whereas SG law mandate that one blade can only be used on one eye/patient. Another reason why I always feel more comfortable getting medical treatment in SG.

I knew somebody will critisize something in the case of medical treatment done outside Singapore.

Careful where you get this very delicate surgery done. Only choose the best your money can buy. Eyes are so precious. Research, research your surgeon.

This is utter nonsense, you are really out of line here.

Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok is known as the best hospital in Asia, world class standards. All specialists there are either Thai being educated and having extensive experiences in USA and Europe, or they are in a lot of cases specialists from abroad.

And although I somehow think Hiccup is the latest product from Google or The Yellow Pages in his neverending quest for finding the right websites and information for you (on a discount), he has a point in saying that people from all over the world go to Bangkok for surgery and medical treatment.

The main reason for it being cheaper over there, is because of lower cost of labour and an incredible cost efficient policy and processes at Bumrungrad.

Don't get me wrong, Singapore has a very high standard of medical care, but alas, it is not at the same level as this worldfamous hospital in Bangkok.

Be it for dental (yes, I do go there for specialist dental treatment, half the price of Singapore and twice as good, 4 times as cheap as Europe and still far better) or for plastic surgery or for any kind of treatment.

Using blades several times is more likely to happen in a hospital in Nigeria or alike, but certainly not at Bumrungrad, proposterous...

Okie, you opened my eyes to this institute. It is amazing they even have their website in Japanese and Chinese (more amazing in that they have both the simplified and traditiioanl version).

So not all health facitlities are the same in Bangkok. I was only quoting from what I read on asiaone.com which mentioned about the blade situations (i.e there are hospitals in Bangkok that do that). Should not have assumed they all do that. But for those interested in overseas surgery, I still think it a good idea to check with the surgeon how many times they use the blades.

I did the wavefront, suppose to be the latest technology with more precise result, even though my surgeon advised against it as he was trying to save me some $$$.

Thank you everybody for your contribution. This Bumrungrad in Thailand is really something, never knew such a medical centre would exist in Thailand. I will heed your advice, research, research and research...

You are still recovering and experiencing halo (not within control of surgeon)??? How is that possible? What is the cause? How long does it take to fully recover ?

I am still collating more information in the mean time, before deciding whether to take the plunge or not. Indeed, 85% success rate is not very reassuring since we are talking about our eyes! But I am tired of using eye drops, staying out not more than 12 hours a day, restricted from taking a nap while wearing lenses... bla bla bla...

Anyhow, I will share my research once I am done with it (could take months ... hahaha)

As said, Bumrungrad is a class on its own, no kidding. Thailand may in a lot of cases wanna bee country, but this one is just really Amazing Thailand.

This summer I will take a budget carrier (air asia, bangkok airways, tiger airways or any other) and fly there, stay for a week and get myself 8 crowns (yes, you read it well, I need 8 crowns for christ sake....).

In Holland this would cost me about 2500 Euros, in Singapore about 2000 sgd and in Thailand it will cost me less than 1000 Sing, including flight....

Just the pain of the operation itself, eeeks.....
