Singapore Expats

Now if we can't cruise, what can anyone suggest about Phuket? Or anyplace else in the area? Where to stay, what to do, tours to do, etc. There will be 2 lazy parents and 2 teenagers. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I personally don't go much on Phuket itself but it's easy enough to get a boat to Ko Lanta or Phi Phi.

THese islands are awesome and very laid back (post tsunami), and a mate of mine says it is still just as nice now

I forgot -- one more thing. Since your kids are of the right age, you may want to plug them into an organization called Hands on Thailand. I'm not sure in what capacity they are still operating, but they run a tsunami relief and clean-up operation in and around Phuket. Last year my kids went and did beach clean-up for a day. It was hard, but they really appreciated it afterward.

Recently I went to Krabi and had a very good deal thanks to that website.

I am not a regular of Phuket, went there only once, but I enjoyed much more Krabi. Less developed, less tourists.... And now Tiger offers good deals from Singapore to Krabi.

I've been to Phuket quite a few times so I might be able to provide you some idea on what you can do and where to stay.

1. Andaman White Beach - beautiful resort, a tad far from town but literally next to sea. Quite affordable and the food within the hotel is quite good.

2. Holiday inn - Recently renovated and open their new wing. Very swanky and nice

3. East Coast seafood place - nice for lunch or dinner

4. Elephant ride - Fun for kids too

5. Go-kart - for speed monster

6. Bungee jumping - Hell but fun

7. Let's Relax - massage, the decently priced but GOOD !!

8. Restaurant next to Baan Rim Pa, can't remember the name but cheap and good

9. Rang Yai island - Fifteen minute ride by high speed boat to a nice isolated island

hello, that was very helpful... we're going to phuket next month and we're so excited. do you have any idea how much would it cost for their watersports like their waverunner rent? where can we get the elephant ride? is it near patong too? how was it? how bout their spa? where to find around the area and what are the ranges? im so excited!!! =)

Gotta_Think,

1. Elephant ride is quite near to Patong - about Baht500 and above depending on duration of ride

2. Watersports like jetski is about Baht600 but negotiable. There are others like para-sailing which I'm not too sure but definitely cheaper than jetski

3. Spa - There are quite a few good spa around but I'm recommending you Let's Relax - the most affordable and yet good spa around. It's just diagonally opposite Holiday Inn hotel.

Since I'm at it, let me throw in some more for your pleasure while you're there ...

1. Banana Disco - Its along Patong Beach and playing interesting array of music. Would be a good clubbing place at night.

2. Safari Disco - Nestled on top of the hill, most tuk-tuk would know how to get you there. With a theme following the name, you'll go wild/

We've been to Phuket many times, though I'd agree with CD and mention that Krabi (Aonang to be precise) and Samui are more pleasant.

It's very easy and cheap to rent a jeep for 500-800 baht and drive along the coast, stopping off at lots and lots of places that are breathtaking and interesting.

We tend to spoil ourselves in terms of hotels and such - why stinge when on vacation?! - and the choice is huge.

Eric mentioned Patong - umm, maybe not the best place to go with your kids when the pubs open - unless you crave drunk english/german/dutch/italian/australian overnight ladies-men. (Watch for bafana, though, he's a regular when he's not trawling Pat Pong)
