SINGAPORE - Asian expatriates ranked Singapore the best place to live out of 257 locations worldwide because of its clean air, infrastructure and low crime rate, a survey published on Monday showed.

SURVEY RESULTS: The best locations in the world for Asians to live

1 Singapore
2 Australia, Sydney
3 Australia, Melbourne
4 Australia, Canberra
5 Japan, Kobe
6 New Zealand, Auckland
7 Denmark, Copenhagen
8 Canada, Vancouver
9 New Zealand, Wellington
10 Switzerland, Basel

Australia was also popular among Asians sent to work overseas, with Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra taking the next three spots, according to ECA International, a human resource consultancy for multinationals.

As more companies from China, India and Singapore expand overseas and send their employees abroad for work, employers want to know which cities are the most or least popular in order to devise suitable compensation packages.

ECA's survey, based on expatriate surveys and country data, ranked cities according to climate, social network, health facilities, transportation, education, crime and other criteria.

'Singapore scores very well on all factors' among Asians, Lee Quane, ECA's Hong Kong-based general manager, said. 'It has brilliant infrastructure in terms of housing, and transportation and quality and availability of goods and services.' -- REUTERS

When you are paid loads of extra money doing same kind of work as the locals, everywhere is a nice place.

Not true, it depends on whether the locals welcome you isn't it?

I am talking for me only, as I don't know the case of others.

"loads of extra money"? I strongly disagree. Of course when I decided to move to Singapore I took into account the fact that I would earn more. But if I really compare - for instance when living in Europe you automatically get pension and social security, which you have to take care of here - I think it tallies.

(and from what I hear, most of expatriates today get local contracts)

"everywhere is a nice place" ? Disagree again. Just to give one example you can offer me "loads of extra money" to go to Baghdad, I would not accept. Today, the main reason for me to stay in Singapore is because I like the place. I left my previous job when I was asked to relocate in Europe!
