My housing agent took me out to see an apartment today...brand new (they are still finishing up the last details).

As we walked into the kitchen I saw a room with a very thick door, I assumed that it was some sort of storage room for the kitchen but they later told me it was a bomb shelter...taking a closer look it was, altoghether with it's red light a phone and TV hook.

I have to say I was a bit surprised and Singapore was the last place I expected to see with this "built-in" feature on a condo.

Has anyone else has this in their condos? Is there some real threat that justifies having one at your place?

And what floor is this so called bomb proof room?

Yes, I have heard about bomb shelters and seen safe rooms in a few houses. Some of the very old landed properties have/had bomb shelters that are no longer functionable, a left over from WWII. Some of the new ones have panic rooms, which were built for a specific person, not to address a specific threat.

Perhaps the owner of this particular flat thought it necessary, or do all the apartments in the complex have this feature? Also, do you think it's more like a 'fire' door?? You'd be surprised what can get lost in translation.

If it has a red light though maybe previous maid was using it for more suspect business.

I have read somewhere that some MRTs have bomb shelters underneath...

I remember a few moves ago, looking at the ugliest damn house. I forgot where it was but the owners had installed keypad locks on all the bedrooms, even though their kids were all under the age of 6 or 7 and couldn't even reach the keypads...

Technically those shelters will not guarantee you'll be allright in the even of a raid. Just there to make you feel safer, psychologically.

I mean you're on a high floor, so if the rest of your apartment crumbles, your shelter will stand strong? How you're gonna get down if it does..by chopper?

It can get stuffy in there even during peace times.

Storage and BDSM do go hand in hand doesn't it? It is a sort of serious work...

They showed me three units and all of them had it, no ventilation holes seem to be there just power outlets, phone and cable plugs.

Are you serious about using that as a maids room...I would find it insane to have someone living there is so tiny and seems if you close the door it will be sooo hot (on the good side of the word )

As for the threat I think people here some times get too paranoic, a colleague of mine drove me to the north part to show me around and we saw some telecom towers, she said "they are supposed to be Singtel's towers but I firmly beleive is more to listen to our neighboors".

I don't know I guess every country has it's own fears based on their past experiences.
