Singapore Expats

Coming over to Singapore next week to look at apartments. Anyone got any strong feeling about good or bad areas to live in?

It really all depends what facilities, type of accomodation, kids/schools, no kids, type of environment etc you are looking for, and just as importantly where you work, how you will travel there and back etc.

If you can give us an idea on some of these I am sure people might be able to give you a bit more of a clue.

My husband's office is in Woodland and the school we have chosen is Tanglin. We are not worried about being near my husband's work (well I'm not!) but it would be nice to be near to other families that have children in the same school.

We don't mind apartment living, but having not had any outdoor space for five years we would love a balcony or terrace.

Being close to the MRT or having a good bus service to it would be good.

I think the family would like access to a gym and pool.

your budget will determine your balcony/patio options. if you're used to HK living, you'll be used to SG living.

if you're driving living around Holland or Buonovista would be nice since it's a short run to the city (Tanglin)...though a bit farther to Woodlands...

better yet, you can choose to stay in Woodlands then take the shuttle services for the kids offered by the school...Woodlands is nice, lived there for about 2 years, much better environment than the city...plan to buy a flat there soon though.....

There are quite a lot of cluster housing type places here that are low rise with nice terraces (bit like Seabird/Seahorse only the interior areas are way bigger) and quite a few also come with condo facilities like pools and bbq areas etc. Some of them have their own gyms as well, not as many though from what I remember.

It depends a lot on how your hubby is travelling to Woodlands as the bus system here can sometimes be a bit obscure and take a lot longer than you imagine it should. However if he is driving then yes, anywhere in the Holland/bukit timah/tanglin, (even the upper bukit timah area) is good for both. Its not too hard to get to the main roads from there and the school is pretty close by as well), the city is not too far either. A lot will depend on your budget.

Would not recommend living anywhere around Woodlands really, it is a long way from anything much else and especially from school. The American school is there, but it has a fantastic bus service of its own for the island. have a look at the districts map in the housing area on this website, it gives you a good idea,anywhere sort of central/west would be good. I think 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, parts of 12 & 21, are pretty good for what you need.

If you have a good agent they will help a lot.
