Singapore Expats

I'm moving to Singapore in a few weeks, after 8 years in New York City.

The East Coast area seems great - being quieter, and the outdoor activities - but my concern would be the commute to work (Tajong Pagar) ... and since I am by myself, feeling like I moved out to the "suburbs."

Any thoughts? Or any suggestions on areas, even specific buildings?

30 years old, single.. looking for a 2br.. budget of around $3000..

Also, while I'm here.. I have a mac computer, about 1 year old.. should I bring it.. or leave it with family here in the States? Thanks again.

East Coast is nice provided you have your own transportation (car) or if the building you live in is close to the MRT system. (Read "subway" system) Tanjong Pagar is one of the stops on the east-west line so you're in luck. Even if you aren't within a 10-minute walk to the closest MRT station, maybe you'll be lucky enough to have a busstop right outside your condo. With a bus that'll take you straight to work.

I live in a condo that's a 20-minute walk to the MRT and the shuttlebus service that was touted as part of the perks of living here ceases running this month. Management does not want to renew the contract. And there are no buses right outside my building. Good thing we have a car.

By the way, Singapore is small. Whether you live downtown or in the East, most everything is about 1 hour away.

why don't you move to tanjong pagar? just found a nice 1 br there at craig's place and with your budget i'm sure you'd be able to get much more. view is awesome, all you see are the orange tiled roof tops of restoration houses. there's lots of food around there and when you walk downstairs you're right on the street. i think after living in nyc, you will not want to have the inconvenience of walking 15 minutes in 95 degree weather to the train or bus and then having to still commute from there! plus.. i didnt like the fact that the 15 minute walk is all along uphill residential areas... but that's just me and my heels talking.

East coast is no doubt quieter as it's more residential and of course the park. I much prefer the area than Tanjong Pagar as i like the feeling of suburban surroundings after a long hectic day in the busy area.

But if you're single, new to the city, some prefer living right in the city..for convenience purposes.

Go ahead and bring your Mac unless you're thinking of purchasing a new pc over here.
