letter to open bank account

how essential is it to have a letter from your home financial institution to open a bank account? i'm leaving for sg in a couple of days so might not have time to get one. i'm a student so wont be able to say i have a job or anything like that

It would not hurt to have a letter but not necessary. All you really need is your passport, you visa granting you rights to stay here, and some money. You don't even need the visa at UOB if someone with an account at the bank will "introduce" you with a letter.

If I have only a temperary visiting visa in Singapore, can I open a bank account?

If u have a visit pass, u cannot open an account

Wrong. Citibank will open an account with your passport, although I think their fees are outrageous... but you can get what you need.
I know UOB will open an account with a letter of introduction from a current account holder... I've done exactly that with someone holding a 90 day social visit pass.
Besides, the OP will have a student visa... all he/she needs is some cash to put in the bank.
