Singapore Expats

Please can you tell me where is good to visit by Train or car within 3 hours of Singapore AT A WEEKEND. We're looking for quiet beaches (Well at least compared to Europe?

I hear coming back to Singapore on a Sunday is pretty busy by road is this the same by rail? Also how bad is it ie is it 1 hour of standing traffic or less?

I will have a new born baby with me when travelling so don't really want to fly but also don't want to stay in Singapore every weekend.

Please can you suggest some good places to go also any links to trains and offers etc would be good.

What is correct me if I'm wrong Sentosa Island like? (I know it's in Singapore)

Sentosa is short for "So Expensive and Nothing To See Actually". But it's by far the easiest place to visit. Bintan (and particularly the Bintan Resorts bit of it), 45 minutes away by ferry in Indonesia, is a close second. I'm afraid there's nothing within three-hour driving distance in Malaysia, although Desaru near JB is a quick escape, the beaches around Kuantan (Cherating) are OK and Tioman's not that much further away.

Sorry for sounding stupid but what does JB stand for? Also how safe is hopping across to Indonesia in relation to earth quakes etc? Is it the wrong side and therefore safe? Obviously not paid to much attention in the past so I'm just lumping all of the islands together etc? I just noticed that Butan had a ferry from Sumatra which is the obvious issue?

Johor Bahru which is just over the causeway into Malaysia. Sorry I can't help with the other questions much, other Bintan is very popular (never been) with the expats as a quick easy place to get away to. I have also been to Sibu off the east coast of Malaysia. Basic, but relaxing.

Err. OK. How's about you spend a nice quiet evening studying a map of South-East Asia, paying particular attention to the little red dot called Singapore and its surroundings. For extra credit, find out where the nearest fault lines are and what directions the waves would go in if there's earthquake.
