Singapore Expats

Hi all,

I decided to sign up here when I saw the nice and useful answers posted by the members, and this is my first post

I have a masters degree in computer science and currently work as an IT-consultant designing and developing systems for a major European telecom company. Now I'm planning to go to Singapore and look for a similar job. Naturally, there are a lot of things I'm curious about, but I'll limit myself to three:

1. Is it difficult to secure an IT job with a decent salary?
2. Should I try to find a job before I go to Singapore or do I have a better chance if I try when I get there?
3. Is anyone hiring?

If you're already working at a "major European telecoms company", by far the easiest and most lucrative way to come to Singapore is to do a transfer in your own company. Once you've been here a year or two, you can get PR and it'll be much easier to land other jobs.

Coming from a similar background (5 years ago) I strongly suggest you try to get an internal move arranged within your "major euro telco". There are always chances and possibilities you may not even think about before. Try to network, do projects abroad, meet people, give it time but be persistant. Sooner or later an opportunity will arise.

To answer your questions:
1. Yes, see 3.
2. Yes, no chance to find one locally without permanent resident status
3. Yes, BUT a lot of competition, cheap folks are readily available.

As you suggested, I will try to network and see what opportunities are available. I already got some contacts, so hopefully it will lead somewhere
