Singapore Expats

Hi I may have to move to Singapore as an internal posting. I have two dogs a labrador and a dalmation. I was given to understand that Singapore is a dog unfriendly country. Can any one advise me on this. How much would an apartment cost?

Spore is not a dog unfriendly country. Small dogs are accepted in apartments and big dogs in landed houses and sometimes apartments. However it is important to check with the individual landlords to see if keeping dogs in their house are permissable.

Only in Dog Runs you can let your dogs run freely - and only couple of dog runs available. Unfortunately these places are far away from city center. You might sneakingly let your dog run freely at places like Mc Ritchie reservoir - but here labrador and dalmation are considered as 'big' dog and locals might horrified when they see them run freely..

You cant have your dog on public transport. If you dont have a car, you have to get a cab, and not every cab driver are willing to get your doggies hopped in, especially 'big' dogs like yours. Worse, only few places happily let your pets staying with you while you eating or dringkin - even in outdoor restaurants. Locals might get used to with toy dogs (wee dogs) but not big ones - most likely they will call the restaurant managers and complain.

I dont accuse all Singaporeans do not love their dogs - I know it's only some of them. Just cant stand what I see everyday.. they dont bother when their dogs want to stop n sniff - just keep talking on their mobiles and pull that very short lead. they have dogs as either toys or status.

I think, Singapore as a country, and some Singaporean, are not dog friendly.

Hi Bill,
I understand u.I'm a student from China just arrive in Singapore,my dog in Shanghai now,and he'll coming here 20 days later.I'm just trying to rent a room in these days, my uncle(he's Hongkongnese but living in Singapore) said most Singaporein don't like to rent their room to dog owner,but u know what?I beleive I'm a lucky girl,I'll be lucky just like i usually do, I'll meet a kind room owner who likes dog also,my dog and me will both have a good life here.
Not all the Singaporein r same,just be optimistic,u'll make it!

Singapore is like new york for dogs, there are quite a few places and like minded owners that help each other in dog sitting, car pooling, etc. I live in the suburbs, and have 2 medium to large mutts, and let the dog run around freely in my estate, the nearby beaches, etc. There are problems in very touristy and public places like the reservoirs and parks, where you can't let your dog go free, but there are still places that you can let your dog hang out, especially if it's well trained, or at least comes when called.
oh, and one of my dogs was from the States, so she's very off-leash!

If you want to share the apartment with some one else, esp locals, most would not agree to having a pet. Some are afraid of the smell, the germs, detsructive pets, or just plain scared.) Most of the singaporeans grow up without a pet (dogs, cat, bigger animals which can move around in the house) cos most cannot afford them and dun have the time. So if you want to bring your doggies over, rent the whole apartment instead.
