Is there any at all in Singapore?

Our landlord/agent sent a letter to increase the rent in june 2006, although we refused to pay it, because no rental increase was in the contract, however we are expecting the increase in December when the contract runs out, although they are trying to double what they quoted in the letter in june.

The kitchen i built myself, because there wasn't one, and the place was supposed to be furnished, it was when we moved in two years ago, furnished with other property owners furniture.

They the agents have taken most of the furniture out, as and when required, before the other property owners found out, there furniture was missing, the agents have also lost our contract and their own conveniently over a year ago, so when they tried to raise the rental in june, i told them to get stuffed, we wouldn't be paying.

Now they are trying to double, there loss, i guess, but I'm not having it, and i don't intend to move so easy either, well not without causing a lot of shit that is.

I don't mind excepting the rental they tried to hit us with in june, and i have the letter to prove it, but no way, will i pay double amount, to make up for, what they first wanted us to pay, but couldn't enforce it.

They can take me to court I guess, i'd like to have my famous moment!

Does that mean that no one currently has a signed copy of the contract? How about photocopies? Not much anyone can do if there isn't a copy somewhere . . .

By the way, the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE)'s statistics lists Real Estate as one of the top industries for filed cases in disputes covered by the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act.

No the agent lost both contracts, no copies, but it doesn't really matter, we have been in the property 23 month, they tried to raise the rent in june, however we refused to except the raise, because we know what was in the contract, and no mention of rent increase was listed. Now its kind of blackmail doubling what they first tried to get away with in June, so that they have the last laugh I guess. But stuff em! they can take me to court, or except, what they tried to raise the rent by in June, which was 100$ a month extra. I can live with that, but know way will i give them 200$ for the next contract, and yes, I do know, if they evict me, they can then increase the rent by what they want.

But there must be some fair play in the middle for the tenant, when we are on local income, not expat package.
These things are sent to test us i guess!

Just read that CASE does not deal with landlord and tenant cases. Bummer!

Well,didnt u have your tenancy agreement stamped at IRAS? If u the legal tenant, then I do not think they can pull a fast one on you.

How much is your monthly rental anyway? Asking for $200 extra means doubling your rental, so is your rental just $200 now? You renting a room and now a whole place right? Sounds quite confusing.

You are the one that's confused. ksl indicated that his rental increase was to be $100 in june (without it being written in the original contract). Now they want to double it to $200. Where is the confusion?

actually they attempted to raise the rental by 100$ in June, but failed because we refused to pay on the grounds of the initial contract rental fixed for two years, with no mention of a rent increase. So now they try to double the increase to 200$ and i will only except the 100$, which is in the letter they sent in June. It's a full 3 bedroom apartment not room.

I guess the owner is just riding on the wave on raising property prices and rental increases which is reported in the newspaper frequently.
