Singapore Expats

my dad got a job offer in singapore and one of the benefits is the family can move there. I want to apply for an IT job. What steps should I take so I'm eligible to work there? Should my dad apply for a special pass for me or the company that will hire will process necessary documents? need your advice. thanks.

It all depends on your age and also qualifications and the skill set. I work in the IT industry and would be able to advise.

I just turned 27 this year. My skill set includes networking, windows server administration, antivirus, security etc. I am also CCNA and undergone Active directory and Exchange 2003 Trainings. By the way, which specific IT industry are you in?

As you are no longer a dependent you will not be allowed to come as a Dependent (as a benefit that the family can move there - family meaning spouse & minors/full time students). You may be able to come in on a LTSVP however. They (Singapore MOM - Ministry of Manpower)may also give you an EPEC if you apply for one (Employment Pass Elgibility Certificate) as you do have a degree in Comp. Sc. This would mean you would have to qualify to come here in your own right. You would then need to find an employer willing to hire you in order for you to convert your LTSVP to an Employment Pass. (the LTSVP & EPEC I believe may be good for 6 months & 12 months but this would have to be confirmed with ICA (Immigration & Checkpoint Authority).

ok thanks. should i apply for an EPEC before I go to singapore? We'll be moving in January. Also. should I start looking for a job now in the Internet? I have to put my current address in my resume and the singapore address? Most jobs I've seen are looking for PRs. Please advice.

I would apply for the EPEC ASAP. There is no guarantee that they will give you one. If not, you may have to either continue to shop for a job from there (almost futile unless you have a hard to find skillset), or come here on a normal visa (when your parents come) and then apply for a LTSVP. This will give you some time to pound the pavements and wear out shoe leather. You could also try the various job boards but unless you have a local address and contact it probably a waste of time. You almost have to be physically present here unless you are being head-hunted.

I'd suggest putting your CV on Monster (with a Singapore address). I've got quite a few calls from interested recruitment agents that way...

btw, we'll be moving in thomaswalk soon. any tips regarding the nearest offices where i can apply for work? what's the environment like in that place?
