Singapore Expats

Hi everyone, any advice on what to bring to Singapore before I depart? We're from London.

For first, I was thinking of lingerie and basic clothings! I couldn't find lingerie my size in Singapore and I am a large there too!!! pfftttt...

Couldn't think of anything else?

Definitely bras, if you don't want them padded. This is the biggest complaint I hear - lack of good bras for bigger sizes.

Clothes shopping is getting easier for us bigger women, with the arrival of more and more UK stores. Some don't stock more than a UK12 but many now stock 16 and beyond.

Cosmetics, etc., are not a problem unless you like Boots brands. They're the only thing I buy when I go back to the UK (or to Thailand!), and more out of novelty than necessity. Don't buy too many as they go off in the heat.

Vitamins and supplements are not cheap so you could stock up on those if you take them. Nurofen used not to be available so I usually buy those on my trips, although you can now get them here.

Mods, can I mention the S-F TLC here? I think hunbunny might find it useful.

The men are not allowed in, which pees them off no end although we keep telling them we really only talk about mascara and bikini waxes. Oh and Daniel Craig.

i don't think that's fair. I used to work at victoria's secret and am well trained in the art of female lingerie. for starters. 2/3 of all women wear the incorrect bra size. second, i was the most popular salesperson on the floor. sounds funny don't it? well it isn't when you consider that most women who buy lingerie are not buying it for themselves to wear in front of the mirror. they are purchasing it to wear for either a loved one and they would seek out my opinions / thoughts on various on what men like and what men want. (for women who think this is hard to believe, just look at the stupid articles in cosmo titled "what men really want.") Also, as a male working in victoria's secret, i was a beacon for any male that felt nervous while shopping for women's lingerie and they would always seek me out because i could help them with sizing / trying to figure out what would be comfortable for their partner to wear.

my favorites were:
(1) the wives that would buy things to wear for their husbands, and then their husbands would come in to buy items for their mistresses (always pay in cash...)

(2) women who wanted to buy things that were either way too small for them or the wrong size...to make themselves feel better (always too easy to get them to spend too much money on things they don't need).

(3) always the old women who would think it's not appropriate for a man to be working in such an establishment while it's ok for them to peruse the men's underwear department to buy their partner's undergarments.

(4) still in the closet cross dressers who were males clearly buying things to wear for themselves.

hmmmm...maybe i should write a book...

LOL! My husband always wanted me to wear sexy lingerie for him. How typical. I usually spend a fortune but he does buy nice things for me. We would go lingerie shopping together too but that is the only time we go shopping together. After 7 years together, he could still not remember my size.

I think it is a lovely idea to have a male working in a lingerie department. You don't see many in Singapore. In fact, I haven't met any.

we usually recommend that the women / man write down their sizes on the back of a card for their husband / lover / boyfriend / mistress so they won't forget...

But they are suppose to remember. That is the whole point. Afterall, they were always trying to grob...........

(1) never ask a woman how old she is

(2) never ask a woman how much she weighs

combination of those two factors with the impact of society's unwritten law "women shop for clothes for their men but men never shop for clothes for their women" means that most men have no idea what sizes their women are. not to mention that over time, people for the most part gain weight so people's sizes tend to change.

oh yea, and most men don't accompany their women when they go shopping ...

if i had a nickel for anytime someone used the "she's kinda the same size as that person over there but a little shorter..."

So huggybear - I'm very curious now - what exactly do men want to see in the lingerie department...??

I have a sneaking suspicion that what I would buy and wear because I think it's sexy might not be what my man wants to be looking at at all....

Oh yes - please write a book!!

whoops...sorry...didn't see this until now.
i know this is kind of a cop-out answer. but the truth is ... every man is different. honestly it's better to just spend a half day or something with your partner looking at stuff and maybe trying it on. most places won't allow 2 people in a dressing room, but you can at least try it on and allow your partner a peak. but yes, i would say what you find sexy and what your partner finds sexy could be vastly different.

another funny story. when i first moved out of college...i lived with three strippers or "adult entertainers" if you will. (no our house wasn't a sex-crazed drug induced party every night...it was actually extremely tame. never had one party honestly...). And it's amazing the difference between as one comedian put it "in the club hot" and "daytime hot."

make up and dark lights go a long long way. haha.

what do women want to see of us men in terms of sexiness? i know everyone says "sense of humor" or "personality" but if i had a body like daniel craig...think i'd be doing better haha.

ha! Daniel Craig? Not my cup of tea.....but I'll have Brad Pitt/Hugh Jackman any day....*looks around for the husband.......

yea hugh jackman is an interesting one...
i guess for his rugged looks?

i always thought owen wilson was spectacular for his surfer looks and sense of humor.

one person who i think is underrated is the bad guy in charlie's angels full throttle ... he's also in love actually...the nerdy / designer guy who in real life happens to be a CK model i think and has a ripped body.

anyways. back to work for me.

Just for your info, "oil of olay" and "oil of ulan" (singapore version) are the same product just a different name.

Same thing happens with vehicles occasionally, The original Datsun 240Z in the US was marketed as the Nissen Fairlady in Asia. Same car.
