What is that about earthquake? As far as I've seen seismic activity reports for Singapore, it should not be any earthquake here. Why everything is shaking?

Earthquake measuring at 6.6 on the Richter Scale struck Padang, Indonesia this morning.

Parkway sway back and forth for 3-4 minutes 50mm either way just before twelve o'clock today and we had an after shock just before 2pm - Not as bad as the first.

11:50 felt 2 shock waves on my contrustction site. Apparently 6.6 and then another 2 hours later about 6 ( according to BBC world news)

Is it normal here? How often it happens in Singapore? I know that there are lot of quakes in Indonesia and hope everybody is ok over there.

we get tremors. Usually it is in Sumatra and we just feel the edge of it. They don't normally cause any damage although there was one a few years ago which damaged somewhere along Beach Rd (I think it was the Golden Mile building).

Similar incident occured last year in the middle of the night. Some of my neighbours were rushing down the stairs in their pyjamas while I was still puzzling beside the windows with my half-opened eyes. Well, it was just a mild shake actually.

Hope things are ok there this time.

Felt it here in UBI. First time for me. I think I felt the second one also.

Why worry? Singapore could do with something to liven it up given how many people tell me its boring.

True True.
However, I can think of a few other methods to shake it up.
1. Sat TV
2. More motor sports.
3. Porn.

They evacuated the buildings at Suntec yesterday. 1000's of people milling about around the front doors in the shadow of the buildings.

Now how much good would that do? All that granite facing would come crashing down on the people standing around if it was a real earthquake.

Good point SE. It'll take a proper event to get them to wake up.
No common sense whatsoever. Can you imagine suntect falling over on them !!!! Then it'll be "nobody told us to move away"
Evacuate a buidling means it's a danger right ( fire. bomb, earthquake) what part of your brain figures it's OK to stand next to the danger doh!!!!

people evacuate our condo - I don't bother because it is 32 flights of stairs and by the time you get halfway down, the tremor has finished.

I'm not sure exactly what people do when they live or work high up and it is right on the earthquake zone. It must be really frightening if you're in that situation.

I always thought there were SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for anything here in Sg. Well, not for tremors or earthquakes.

Yesterday, when I felt the first set of tremors, I thought... hmm... There's supposedly no earthquakes in Singapore... So I went out of the room and went to the other part of the office and asked around (no SOP). After the second set of tremors (my trainees were back from their lunch break), I told them to save their configurations (we were doing our network lab hands-on activities) and prepare their stuff. I was asking whether we should actually prepare to leave the building if ever there were other stronger tremors.

Finally after a few minutes, we heard the announcement from the building management to leave the building. What surprised me was that people in the building would still use the lifts (elevators) to get downstairs instead of taking the stairs.

PS We're located near Chinatown.

You are obviously wiser; the fact is Singapore does not suffer from earthquakes, the country merely feels tremors the way Britain does on occasions (yes the UK). For those who travel, visit or live in Japan for example procedures during earthquakes are well known and warnings are posted in lifts that they should not be used during a quake.
