Singapore Expats

Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me if it is possible to download any video or music content with peer to peer programs (like Azureus, Emule, Bittorrent) in Singapore? Are ISP in Singapore blocking that kind of download?

nope not blocked ...they all work just fine.

Not heard of anyone being banned for thsi kind of thing ( yet) for personal use.
It's when you start handing it around or selling it the trouble will start.

Are you talking about illegally downloading copyrighted music from peer to peer sites without paying for it? Why would you do this?

I am not interested in music files really. I use the program for downloadng the recent episodes of Prison Break, Lost and Heroes. I am quite addicted to these series and I can't wait 3 months to see the current episodes.

I'm addicted to Heroes and would watch all the episodes online while in the US. Can't do that here but you can download it from iTunes. You have to pay for it though

I also saw that NBC website provides the episodes for US residents. Unfortunately you can't reach any content from here. I left Heroes on e11 and now I think e19 has been broadcasted. Also Prison break season 2 has finished and a new season will come. For Lost, I am upto s03e14.

I totally respect Singapore laws and I am not using or going to use any peer to peer connection to avoid breaking the laws. I will ask my brother in Istanbul to download the episodes and send it to me by DVD. I hope that is acceptable, right

By importing pirated tv shows into Singapore you are still breaking the law. Is this really respecting the law?

When the time comes that they start checking the contents of every type of storage device or media, I won't be able to do that. Hopefully they are not checking all the pendrives or the DVDs, CDs you bring with you.

It's true they might fine you. There were cases of a couple of guys caught sharing files on irc that went to court but I don't remember the specifics of the cases. I've heard about people getting warning letters from their isp for sharing, but haven't heard about it going any further.

They don't check everything, but if you're going to post dvds in then I wouldn't send to many as they may think you're doing it for distribution and cause suspiscions. Of course I also know some people have brought in plenty through the airport and never been checked, they just keep it in their hand luggage. I've also been told by singaporeans that they were caught at the seaport bringing in from Batam and all they had to do was pay for the censorship thing. Depends on what chances you're willing to take.

You may have problems with P2P programs. I haven't figured out yet does it have to do with modem configuration or something else. Also in Singapore there everywhere seems to be dynamic IPs (such that they change during your connection session). This may cause problems to some programs.

Those people who uploads in Singapore have the higher chance of being prosecuted than downloaders.
