Singapore Expats

Hi,
We are new to Singapore. We are looking for a mandarin-speaking nanny for day time care and occasional babysitting. How to go about finding one? Any advice based on experience/observations?

Most families have Filipino or Indonesian maids (on Foreign Domestic Worker work permits) as the all in one super care giver. It would be very rare to find a maid (legal) from other countries.

Thus.. the best bet to get a Mandarin Speaking one is from the Straits Times Classifieds who advertise under Section 126 and 150. I believe those are mainly local retirees / housewives who offer baby sitting services.

First off, thanks. Do you think we can find someone like a day/non live-in maid? Someone more than a baby sitter, but essentially one who functions as a nanny but without housing? Our place is small.

We would like our two kids (6 & 4) to be taken care of by a maid who will speak Mandarin to our girls.

There may be an issue if u hire locals and expect them to do domestic chores cos most would confine their services to child minding only.

Perhaps get a professional house cleaning service, + a local child minder?

Alternatively, can consider putting them in full-day care centres. Kids learn/play faster when there's peers ard.

Thanks for your replies. What is a local minder? Like a day-time nanny? We don;t really care so much much about the cleaning, more the cooking and time with the kids.

Local Minder = Since foreign maid is out of the question by virtue of not able to stay on site (and mandarin speaking!) , then only a local would be able to fulfill the role of looking after the kids.

But it's rare to find a local who is willing to cook and look after the kids. I have heard of Malaysian nannys who work as such (but without proper documentation), but those are usually ad-hoc private arrangements such as for confinement periods.

Guess.. I am out of ideas already.

Do you mean the nanny will look after the children at your own house? You can always put an ad in the newspaper. I'm sure many people will response. My mother is experience babysit cos she has been taking care of babies and kid when i'm young. Don't know if she still want to do it now.
