Singapore Expats

Hello all,

I've been checking out your site for a bit now and quite like what I've seen. I would like to get the local expat communities take on the local attitudes towards foreigners, the general quality of living compared to Western Standards, and general availability of foreign goods. I also know the heat can be killer but from your standpoints, is it bearable?

I've lived in a country where the widely used tongue is not English and it made life miserable. Having visited Singapore I found being able to speak English again wonderful, and the people from outward appearances seemed nice. Is it all that it seems though?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi,

It is not the heat but the humidity which kills

Anyway after a few weeks you get used to it.

Here in Singapore as long as your budget permits you can live a western way of life. Rents are quite high and cost of living is quite high depending on your preferences.

Although I live in a condo, I don't feel myself isolated from local fellows, but it is your choice. I find Singaporeans warm and friendly. As long as you respect them and be friendly, you will get the same treatment.

You can find everything here so don't worry about that part.

There's Cold Storage and Carrefour where you can buy a lot of imported foreign food/goods. There's also Mustafa where you can get almost any product from all over the world. (I got chocolates from New Zealand from Mustafa!)

If you're not used to warm tropical weather, it can take sometime for you to adjust. But don't worry, the offices here are all air-conditioned (too much, IMHO). Just drink lots of water to keep you hydrated when you're outside.

I find it to be wonderful. You can get whatever you need here. And, like most people, if you are polite to them, they will be polite to you.
If I have to pick something to complain about, it would be the humidity.

Never changed my PC or other clock times, i just do the calculations, but then again AU is only 2 hours different.
