Singapore Expats

I am a 26 year old English girl and have been living in New York for the past 2 years and have the change to move over to Singapore in September, I am a bit concerned about working London hours 3pm till 1am, anyone on here work those hours and be able to advise if it's that bad, I really want to move out there but with such unsociable hours I'm not that keen.

Hospital work 24 hours a day, lots of factories do. Are you working 7 day/weeks? If not, I don't think your social life would suffer too much. Just might not be able to go on the p**s during the work week very easily. The experience of working in Asia is worth a shot though if all other things are worthwhile.

No worries, Singapore's clubs only start hopping around midnight anyway. Kinda sucks for restaurants though, as the fancier ones all close by 10 PM...

Working London Hours can be very unsociable. Do you know anyone in Singapore? If you dont working those hours will make it difficult to make friends. Say goodbye to spontaneous afterworks drinks, especially your friday nights. Worse if you're in a relationship and your other half is working Asia Pac hours. Do you consider yourself to be a morning person or a night owl? Morning people tend not to last very long on the London shift.

Certainly move to Singapore, it's a great place, but I would think very hard before committing to moving all this way to work London hours.

I have a friend who is also working London hours and he is a commodity trader. He still can hang out with friends in Sat and Sun, so it's not a big problem for him. But I personally think working too late is not good for your skin. Anyway, Singapore is a nice place.

I work uk hours. It's no big deal. In fact I like it. Just think when everyone else is beavering away at 9am to be at work I'm lying in bed! Well maybe you don't want to think of me lying in bed but you get my drift.

I think the hardest time will be when BST finishes and if you work 9am to 5pm that'll be 5pm to 1am. Not been here long enough yet to find that bit out.

I think it also depends on what you do. My business is a home business so doesn't require me to go very far. That makes a huge difference to me.

Weekends are yours but the hardest part for them is that you are still on uk time so you sort of miss the mornings. Shops open about 10ish everyday and close about 10pm pretty much 7 days a week, so no hardship there.

I happen to chop off work early on a friday so manage to meet friends for drinks and saturday nights are also available. It depends on what type of life you lead and the demands on your job. Personally I'm not bothered about weekday meals and all that and am happy to meet friends at the weekend so, again, for me its no problem. It does take a bit of getting used to though. Took me a couple of months but after that its a doddle.

I think the most important thing though is your own mindset. If you think you wont cope, you wont. If you think you can do it and want to experience what Singapore and Asia has to offer you'll manage it.

The only time you'll feel a bit lousy is on Friday nights. That said, parties in Singapore only start around midnight anyway. Otherwise, you'll find your London working hours quite manageable. Plus there's the advantage of starting your Monday at 3pm. LOL.

I keep "office" hours from 11pm-2am from Tuesdays-Thursday and only call in to meetings if and when they are scheduled on Friday nights coz of the North American locations. Otherwise, my "office" hours are 11am-6pm for the AsiaPac and EMEA locations.
