Singapore Expats

Hi everyone,

I'll be in Singapore in a couple of weeks ... and I'm totally looking forward to it.

Quick question. Does anyone know what's involved in purchasing a (small!) sailboat in Singapore? Do I need to get a captain's license first? What about boat slips? Are they easy to find? Expensive?

To be able to take a boat out in Singapore you need PPCDL license. No conversion of other license/certificate is accepted here. PPCDL is very easy to obtain, you just need to sit through hours of theory classes.

You can easily get a small laser/SB3 or JS9000 here. check the used boat that is available. I have a JS9000 for sale if you are interested.

You may also join the many boats here who are normally short of crew. However, the regattas season is just about to end in 3 weeks. You will have to join the regional regattas or wait for next year.

boat slip: depending where you want to keep your boat. I would recommend Raffles Marina, although is a little far from city but it is the most active sailing marina where you meet other sailors.

You can probably find the berthing fees from their website.

One15 marina is great, but current is too strong for small boats with no engine or small outboard.

Where can we rent a boat for one day sailing? I contacted a sailing centre in Singapore but they always replied they were busy with training and asked me to wait. Finally I gave them up. Several of us just want to rent a boat for a weekend, would like to sail to somewhere and do kayaking, but we also need a local captain who knows water here very well.

well... if singapore u can't sail ......why don't you look forward out to the next door country " malaysia" .. you could try out in seremban, with famous sailling club. Its really inexpensive and save lots of money.....

I am not so sure about Ciaral's suggestions, i have been to port dickson yacht club, they only rent out dinghy and they have also limited of those for rent.

Mangocar, i think it depends on how much money you expect to spend on a charter boat and what type of boat do you have in mind?

You might be able to check with RSYC, Raffles Marina and SAF Yacht Club, i think they have some JS24 or plateaus for rent. However, it is not the regatta season (for another 3 weeks), most boats are used for the regattas.

For a better choice, go Langkawi or Phuket for Sunsail, worth the money for the cruising area.

Thanks for your info. We will be out of Singapore at the end of this month until early Sept. However, $1400 per head is far beyond our budget. We are actually looking for a small sailing trip and try to keep the cost under $100 per pax. It looks the chance is slim. Maybe we should take the suggestion to sail in Thailand or Malaysia.

want to sail cheaply? join the people who already got a boat. plenty of boats always need more hands.

Some time later this year, we will have motor boat for rent, 5 hours, 800 bucks.
