Hi there,

I wonder can you tell me if I have a cleaner/maid come to my home for 4hours a week do I need to ensure she has insurance?

Someone mentioned this to me and I never thought to ask the woman who comes in...she is a local woman,

I don't think you will need to buy medical insurance for your local maid.

However, foreign maids are required, starting 1 Jan 2008.

You simply run a huge risk if you don't purchase insurance. You might trust the lady based on intuition but you need to decide if you are prepared to take the risk, or whether it's better to err on the side of caution.

There seems to be some confusion here. If you are hiring a part time maid the only legal way to do that is through an agency. In this case, the responsibility for insurance for the maid (medical) lies with the agency. This applies to foreign maids.

If you are hiring a legal local, then no medical insurance requirements exist, especially as she is part time. Just like hiring someone to cut your grass or repair your aircon.

If you are talking about theft and/or liability insurance for your maid, that is another story... personally I am unaware of any policy that would insure against maid theft.

What is it you want to insure?

i guess you need to make sure that the insurance protection fully complies with the philippine Embassy's requirements.

Good day. I recently moved to Singapore and was looking to hire a part time maid. I've been trying to research up on the legal requirements, etc. when I saw this post. So far, I've found that I can either:
1) Hire a part-time maid directly (referral, etc)
2) Hire via agency

I wanted to ask:

a) Is it legal to directly hire the same part-time maid of another if the maid has no other full-time employment (only part-time)? The post above seems point that it's not legal, but wanted to confirm.

b) Do I need to provide medical / accident insurance for either (1) or (2), given that the maid is a PR, not a foreigner? It seems no need, from the posts I've seen, but am not certain what it would be if the maid was hired directly and is a PR. Most of the posts refer to foreign maids.
