Singapore Expats

I'm a SPR and my boyfriend is a Malaysian Chinese holding work permit.
We haven't got married yet but I'm pregnant. We don't want to rush to marry but we do really want to keep the baby. If we haven't got a marriage certificate, can we apply for a birth cert for the baby after delivering?

Any input would be appreciated!

Yes you can apply for a birth certificate but probably only at your embassy/consulate and/or the Malaysian embassy/consulate (you did not indicate what your nationality was). The child most definitely WILL NOT be a Singapore Citizen by virtue of being born here.

If the baby is born in Singapore it will have SPR status as well. This is not a real problem if the baby is a girl, however if it is a boy you best bet would be to have the child in Malaysia or HK. Otherwise, the boy will be required to eventually do NS unless you renounce his SPR before he is 11 or 13 years of age (it is supposedly been changed to 13 but I cannot vouch for that).

If the child is born in SG, he/she will have SPR status, but I've to get his/her birth cert from HKSAR/Malaysia embassy. Is that correct?

NS is not my concern. But if later on I got SG citizenship, can the child also get the same?

I would think the same applies as does the US Embassy but it would be a good idea to give them a call to confirm. You would need to take your Local Certificate of Birth to the embassy where the documentation can be done to register the birth of a citizen abroad. Not sure which country would have preference but I would think HK SAR would be the obvious one as you are the mother. However, for all I know maybe you can register the birth in Malaysia as well. If you are not concerned with the NS question giving birth here is OK.
