Singapore Expats

Has anyone used a slingbox to access UK TV in Singapore. I was going to buy one here in UK but was worried the Singapre gov't may be blocking TV from overseas?

Anyone had success with UK TV, slingbox or otherwise?

Don't know what a slingbox is.

for sure, you can use a slingbox in the UK and view it in singapore. slingbox is the best thing since slice bread for about £90, it is well worth it.

you can either access freeview or sky digital. the slingbox classic has a built-in DVB-T so all you need is to connect up the slingbox in the UK to a tv aerial and to your broadband router. for sky digital, you will need a sky digibox in the UK. and in singapore, just install the slingbox client on a PC and point it to the UK slingbox.

if your ISP upload speed is higher, then the better the quality. most ISP upload speed is about 256kbit. my ISP in UK is be (www.bethere.co.uk) and their ADSL2/2+ upload speed is about 1.3mbit and my ISP in singapore is starhub cable.

The site Splatted suggested is very good - although we've had problems with the quality of the stream.
(we tend to watch big sporting events, so it may just be cos of congestion) - defo worth looking at the 7 day trial

UKNova.com is v good for downloading UK telly, although it's only terrestrial stuff.
NB - they heavily restrict memberships, so you may need to keep checking to see if they're accepting new members....... took me a few weeks of daily checking ! However, being selective with membership means they only let people remain a member if their share ratio is good, so we get cracking download speeds!

But have you scanned through the "Not Allowed List" of programs they don't permit to be uploaded??

One option, for streaming is www.myp2p.eu where you can watch without actually installing software. The list of channels goes up and down a lot depending on time of day and who is uploading etc. but it can be possible to see any UK TV channel on some days.

BBC News and Entertainment through Starhub.

Watch Red Dwarf, Keeping Up Appearances, etc all the time. Also got new Doctor Who series and soon to have Robin Hood.

Another thing to think of is the time difference. Breakfast/lunchtime tv is not the most entertaining...

I use bit torrents and my missus has eastenders and corrie whenever she wants and it saved me a divorce
you can get all sorts of progs if you want as well.
Pictures are great and the site is great although you may need an invite.

i got the slingbox working for the missus, so she's happy

I have recently installed a Slingbox in Germany and been accessing it without any problems remotely. The only issue in Singapore is that it seems impossile to get a higher downstream speed than around 512KB. I upgraded my SingTel broadband to their 25Meg plan, which hasnt changed anything. One of their technicians has now explained to me that Singapore internet infrastructure restricts the speed of data / traffic coming from overseas.

Any truth to that or any expert views? Cheers
