Hello everyone.
I am an Indian. I have been offered a package of 66000S$ /year . I am single. They would also subtract a security deposit from this money. No other expenses will be paid. . I earn around 40,000 rs/ month here. Will it make any sense to migrate to singapore???Will I be able to save atleast 50,000 ?? Most importantly How much would be my monthly expenses ( home+ Phone+internet+ food+travel+ tax), i mean all the bare minimum that one needs to spend on a monthly basis?? Kindly help and elaborate.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

I really hate saying these things, but first of all, I think what you are being offered is way, way to much. I don't care what your job is. If you can find this website, figure out how to register, and post a message, then surely you know how to use the sites search function. A simple search for "living costs" turned up 125 posts containing those words. This is a non-profit forum, it is manned by unpaid moderators who contribute as much as their time will allow but we all have jobs as well. If you have a specific question please ask but please do your due diligence first. In the meantime you can start here:

Dear Moderator,
Firstly, thanks a ton for your valuable time on my post.
However, I should have put my query as the "updated cost of living" , since as per my knowldge the rentals have caught fire in the last couple of months, therefore I require an updated detail.

And yeah, i did find on my own before asking this general query as i could find details from yr 2004 or so form this forumn. Hope someone finds time to reply to my query.

Best Regards.

The link I just posted was started in Jan 07 and the last post was this month. There are several threads currently in progress discussing the rental situation.

if you are looking to stay in a new/relatively new condo (with all its varieties facilities e.g. swimming pool, bbq pit etc) within the central area ie District 9,10,11, for a 1 bedroom, it would be around S$4-5k.

As for monthly expenses, budget around S$500 for all utilites and tvcable/internet/mobile/transportation by MRT/bus (of course ultimately it depends on personal usage).
For food, it really depends on where you eat, if you eat at the food court/hawker centre it is much much cheaper (about S$4/5 for rice/noodles) than eating in a restaurant.

bottom line with your salary, you would definitely be able to save, the question is how much do you want to save versus what kind of lifestyle do you want to have in Singapore.

hope this info helps.

I was going to do some calcs, but can't be terribly bothered right now... But wouldn't you say spending 4 or 5 k on a condo and being skinflint on everything else is a bit of a weird way to manage your finances??? Based on this he would spend 72% - 91% of his gross salary on RENT!!!!

I would not think you would be able to save close to that. Being a foreigner, you will be tax at a flat rate of 15%. That would leave you with $56,100. Let's say your monthly expenses all included (i think this is very difficult to achieve) is $1000. You will save $44,100 the most. On top of that, flights to and back home and other travelling would be additional.

HB80,

Welcome back you two! Hope the Hols were good. Nice to meet you all.

Anyway, better look again at the IRAS website. An Expat, once here over 183 days qualifies to use normal Singapore Resident/Citizen rates which are graduated as you know. With effect of sometime in the past couple of weeks the 183 days period can now bridge two years (before in had to be in one year).

Using this, his taxes would only be $3100/year which would be an additional savings of over $7000/year.

Dear HunnyBunny,

Thanx for the response..however I dont think that a SGD1000 is achievable..is it? Anyways I was talkin of about saving atleast SGD2000 to SGD2500 per month out of SGD6600...that 50K figure was in Rs...si i guess I would be able to live a decent life spending SGD2.5 to 3K [including taxes] in Singapore...

Hi there,

I'd say that its possible for you to save Rs.40,000 provided you rent a room (even say $800 or so in a condo) and eat mostly in food courts and for occasional splurge during weekends. The accomodation cost might be the big one to watch out these days. Its like, if you want to good pleace to stay, then you pay high for accomodation and you need to cut down on the rest and vice versa.
