Singapore Expats

Hi

I am a black man who will be moving to Singapore next month from an island near the Caribbean region. I notice that there seems to be a number of Africans living in Singapore, so my concern is probably unfounded, but can anyone living there tell me where I could go to get my hair cut? My wife is michievously lining me up for hair cutting 'practice' as she fancies herself somewhat of an expert hairdresser. Help!

I don't know of any specifically for black men but the next best thing would be to use the services of a Malay barber. They probably have more practise with tight curls or wavy hair.

Anyway, my wife and I are heading there for 6 mos in Feb/Mar. This has been high on my list of things to worry about as well. Let me know if you find anything, and I'll promise to do the same.

I can understand your concern about barbers in Singapore, I have a hell of a time finding a hairdresser here (I am blonde and they just cant get it right!) Anyway, my son has loads of curls and I find the only ones who can do it right are the malay barbers. You can find them almost anywhere. The chinese ones are usually female hair dresser shops(although they do cut mens hair and have men working there) but its just not like a real barber. First time i took my son to one they cut all his hair off because they didnt know what to do with the curls. I really didnt like it at all (he was basically bald!) And being curly it grew back worse then before! Anyway now I only take him to the malay barbers, they are really good.

Hey y'all, did you find a barbers? I am a fellow Jamaican, I have been in Singapore for 5 weeks now and my fro is in need of a shape up.

twoawi and blusoul - I'm here in Singapore now and the countdown is on before my neat island haircut (told my barber back at home to cut it mostly off before I left the island last week) turns into a fro!

I happened to bump into a guy today who said that there are some Nigerian guys up in little india somewhere that might be able to help out

the bottom line is that something has to be done and soon!

I too am in much the same situation. I arrived in Singapore two weeks ago with my wife. I plan to stay here for a few years. I came here with a shaped afro. Day by day, I look in the mirror in the lift and am noticing the change -- I am beginning to cringe. If you find somebody good please let me know! Perhaps we should use the same barber to allow them to get lots of practice. Failing that, lets hook up, make sure we have the equipment and bring the style back!

Thanks for the directions. I am planning to drop by there some time this afternoon. The first haircut is always nerve racking. I will let you know how it goes.

As far as meeting up goes I am usually free on the weekends, at least until my wife gets in town next week. I am down in the Tanjong Pagar area. Just pick a spot.
